The Sega CD (Mega-CD outside North America and Brazil) is a CD-ROM peripheral for the Sega Genesis, released starting in 1991 in Japan and 1992 in North America as part of the fourth generation of consoles. It adds a faster CPU and a dedicated graphics chip to enable CD-based games with larger storage, and can also play audio CDs and CD+G discs. Developed by Sega in partnership with JVC to compete with NEC’s PC Engine CD-ROM², it was later licensed to third parties such as Pioneer and Aiwa, sold about 2.24 million units, with Sonic CD as its best-selling game (about 1.5 million copies).
