CDS Hooks provides a standard, hook-based API that enables real-time clinical decision support to be invoked from a clinician’s workflow within an electronic health record (EHR). When a triggering activity occurs (for example, opening a patient record, selecting orders, or signing an order), registered CDS services return cards—information, suggestions, and app links—that are rendered in the workflow and can be acted upon by the clinician. The project includes an OpenAPI/Swagger specification, a sandbox for testing, and is developed by HL7 in collaboration with Boston Children's Hospital to facilitate integration of CDS into clinical workflows.
