The Public Insight Network (PIN) is an American Public Media initiative started in 2003 to bring more voices into journalism, making reporting more inclusive, collaborative, and community-focused. It maintains a secure, searchable database of citizen sources that journalists can query by demographics, geography, expertise, or interests to test hunches, uncover angles, and inform coverage—often on deadline or early in reporting. Contributions are voluntary and confidential, with nothing published without the contributor’s explicit permission, and participants may appear in stories across APM programs or be invited to newsroom events.
