Open banking data access

• Best for: US fintech onboarding, account ownership verification, fraud reduction, and transaction-data analysis.
• Watch out for: Available identity fields vary by bank; Plaid notes that only name data is guaranteed in its Identity retrieval endpoint.
• Developer documentation

TrueLayer

(Best for UK/EU verification)

TrueLayer offers a Verification API that compares a submitted name with account-holder information returned by a connected bank. Its data APIs also provide account and transaction information. Verification availability is documented for the UK, Germany, and Spain in public beta, with other countries available on request.docs.truelayer.com+1

• Best for: Bank-account verification, name matching, and payment-linked onboarding.
• Watch out for: Confirm production access, country coverage, and supported banks for your exact use case.

Tink

Tink is worth evaluating for European deployments that need account aggregation and normalized financial data across multiple banks. It is especially relevant when KYC is part of a wider underwriting, income-verification, or financial-risk workflow.

• Best for: European coverage, account data, transaction categorization, and financial insights.
• Watch out for: Confirm that the specific identity-verification functionality you need is included in your commercial agreement.
• Website

MX

MX is another US-focused candidate for bank connectivity, financial-data enrichment, and account information that can support risk and identity workflows.

• Best for: Financial-data aggregation, enrichment, and risk-oriented applications.
• Watch out for: Validate bank-level coverage, owner-data availability, refresh behavior, and the exact API products offered under your contract.
• Website

Yapily

Yapily is a candidate for UK and European open banking integrations, particularly where account information services and payments need to be integrated into a single platform.

• Best for: European bank connectivity and embedded open banking.
• Watch out for: Establish whether bank-owner identity matching is a native product or something you must implement using returned account data.

Stripe Financial Connections

A particularly practical option if your KYC workflow is already built around Stripe. It supports bank-account ownership details, balances, and transaction history, and integrates with Stripe's payments and identity products. Stripe reports coverage of over 97% of US bank accounts.stripe.com+2

• Best for: US payment onboarding, payout verification, and financial-data checks inside Stripe-based products.
• Watch out for: It is not a standalone replacement for a complete KYC verification service.

How they compare for KYC

These are indicative product fits, not independent reliability rankings. Confirm current production coverage and contract terms directly with each provider. For example, MX documents account-owner verification and OAuth connectivity, while Stripe documents owner details and transaction retrieval.www.mx.com+2

What actually makes a provider reliable?

For a production KYC workflow, I would test these six things before choosing based on coverage claims alone.

1. Coverage of your actual banks

Test your top 20–50 banks by customer volume, including smaller banks and credit unions. Measure successful connections, not just the number of institutions advertised.

2. Identity-field completeness

Check how often you receive a legal name, address, and other needed fields. Distinguish missing data from a genuine identity mismatch.

3. Connection success and freshness

Measure successful connections, API latency, stale-data frequency, reconnect rates, and recovery from bank outages.

4. Consent, security, and compliance

Verify consent records, revocation handling, encryption, access controls, audit logs, retention policies, and the provider's regulatory status in each market.

5. Decisioning and fallbacks

Confirm that you can distinguish a verified match, a mismatch, insufficient data, and a technical failure. Route uncertain cases to another verification method or manual review.

6. Total cost per successful verification

Compare API fees, failed connection costs, retries, minimum commitments, and the operational cost of manual reviews—not just the headline price.

My recommendation

• US-first KYC: Start with Plaid and MX. Add Stripe Financial Connections if you already use Stripe for payments.
• UK/EU-first KYC: Start with TrueLayer and Tink; include Yapily if you want broader open banking infrastructure.
• Multi-region onboarding: Consider a primary provider plus a fallback, with a provider-independent interface in your application so you can switch or route requests when coverage is weak.

A typical architecture is: government ID and liveness verification → consent-based bank connection → bank-owner name matching → transaction or income analysis when justified → risk decision and audit record. Use the bank connection as an additional signal rather than treating it as proof of every aspect of identity.

Which provider should you choose?

These are use-case-based recommendations, not an independently measured reliability ranking. Confirm the provider's current availability and contractual coverage in your target market before committing.

What to check before integrating

I would assess each vendor against these six criteria:

1. Coverage: Does it connect to the banks your customers actually use in each target country?
2. Verification quality: Does it return a direct match/no-match result, a match score, or just raw account-holder data?
3. Regulatory suitability: Can you use its service within your applicable KYC/AML framework, and who is responsible for the required compliance controls?
4. Reliability: Ask for bank-connection success rates, API uptime commitments, latency percentiles, incident history, and fallback procedures.
5. Security and privacy: Review consent handling, data retention, encryption, subprocessors, and applicable certifications or independent audit reports.
6. Commercial fit: Compare per-successful-verification pricing, minimum commitments, failed-connection charges, and production access requirements.

One especially important question for vendors is whether their API can verify a submitted identity against bank-held data, or merely return data for your own matching logic.

My recommendation

• For a US-first KYC integration, start by evaluating Plaid Identity alongside Plaid Identity Verification.
• For a UK-first open banking identity check, start with TrueLayer's Verification API.
• For a pan-European deployment, compare Tink, Yapily, and TrueLayer using your actual bank coverage requirements.

For any of these, determine whether you also need a dedicated AML screening and sanctions/PEP-checking service.
