Mobile app backend platform in Developer Backend & Vector Search Services | Parse

Your priority	Best choice
Get a mobile app running quickly	Firebase
Push notifications with minimal setup	Firebase
SQL database and relational user data	Supabase
Real-time updates and offline support	Firebase
Existing AWS infrastructure	AWS Amplify
More database portability and self-hosting options	Supabase

There is no single "best" backend-as-a-service (BaaS) for everyone, but a few top contenders stand out depending on whether you prefer an all-in-one proprietary ecosystem or an open-source relational setup. Both data storage and push notifications are critical features, and they are handled best by the following platforms:[](https://rockstardeveloperuniversity.com/best-backend-as-a-service-platforms/)

Firebase (Best Overall for Mobile) : The undisputed heavyweight for mobile apps. It provides Cloud Firestore / Realtime Database for data storage, robust native SDKs for iOS and Android, and FCM (Firebase Cloud Messaging) for completely free and reliable cross-platform push notifications. With recent updates adding PostgreSQL compatibility options (Data Connect), it bridges the gap between NoSQL speed and relational flexibility.[](https://rockstardeveloperuniversity.com/best-backend-as-a-service-platforms/)
Supabase (Best Open-Source / SQL Alternative) : If you prefer a powerful relational database (PostgreSQL) over NoSQL and want to avoid vendor lock-in, Supabase is the leading choice. It handles user authentication, file storage, and database triggers easily. Note that Supabase doesn't have a native built-in push notification engine, so developers typically pair it with a dedicated notification provider like OneSignal or Novu via Edge Functions.[](https://rockstardeveloperuniversity.com/best-backend-as-a-service-platforms/)[[2](https://www.guideflow.com/blog/backend-as-a-service)](https://www.guideflow.com/blog/backend-as-a-service)
Appwrite (Best Self-Hosted / Flexible Option) : An open-source, Firebase-style backend that gives you total control. It features built-in databases, user authentication, storage, and an integrated Messaging service that supports push notifications (via APNs, FCM), SMS, and emails right out of the box. You can use their managed cloud or self-host it anywhere.[](https://rockstardeveloperuniversity.com/best-backend-as-a-service-platforms/)[[2](https://www.guideflow.com/blog/backend-as-a-service)](https://www.guideflow.com/blog/backend-as-a-service)
AWS Amplify (Best for Enterprise & AWS Stacks) : Ideal if your infrastructure or enterprise team is already anchored in Amazon Web Services. It hooks directly into Amazon DynamoDB for storage and Amazon Pinpoint or SNS for managing targeted push notifications.[](https://rockstardeveloperuniversity.com/best-backend-as-a-service-platforms/)

To help narrow down the ideal choice, let me know:

Are you building for iOS, Android, or cross-platform (Flutter, React Native)?
Do you prefer a NoSQL document store (like Firebase) or a Relational SQL database (like Postgres)?
Do you want an all-in-one managed cloud service or the ability to self-host?
