High-speed WireGuard VPN

2. Proton VPN

(Best free option)

Proton explicitly states that its free plan has no artificial speed limits or data caps and supports WireGuard. Free servers may be busier, while paid plans offer access to a larger server network.protonvpn.com+2

• Best for: Trying a VPN without paying.
• Trade-off: Less control over server selection on the free plan.

3. Mullvad VPN

A strong privacy-focused alternative that uses WireGuard and provides tools to troubleshoot slow connections, including changing WireGuard ports.mullvad.net+1

• Best for: Privacy, straightforward pricing, and direct WireGuard support.
• Trade-off: You should test its speeds from your location before committing.

Which one should you choose?

My first pick is PIA if your main requirement is WireGuard without intentional speed throttling. If you want a free service, start with Proton VPN.

To narrow it down, I have one question:

What do you primarily need the VPN for?

Large downloads / torrents

Streaming movies and TV

Gaming / lowest latency

Privacy and everyday browsing

Avoiding ISP throttling

Budget

Free only

Paid is fine

Prefer a one-time payment

Your internet speed (if known)

Under 100 Mbps

100 Mbps–1 Gbps

Over 1 Gbps

2. Proton VPN

(Best for privacy and speed)

Best if you want strong privacy with excellent performance.

TechRadar measured 1,475 Mbps on a nearby connection and 1,548 Mbps between the US and UK using WireGuard. It is especially worth considering if you connect to international servers.www.techradar.com+1

A good choice for browsing, streaming, and travel; a free plan is also available.

3. PrivadoVPN

(Best for raw speed)

Best if maximum throughput is your main concern.

TechRadar measured 2,334 Mbps using WireGuard on a nearby server in its 2026 testing, the highest result in that comparison. Its main trade-off is a weaker OpenVPN fallback and fewer extra features.www.techradar.com+1

4. Windscribe

Best free option to try.

Its free service supports WireGuard and reached 1,594 Mbps in TechRadar's testing. The catch is a 10 GB monthly data allowance, so it may not suit heavy streaming or downloading.www.techradar.com+1

How to minimize speed loss

Whichever service you choose, these steps will make a difference:

• Select WireGuard in the VPN settings, or NordLynx if you're using NordVPN.
• Connect to a nearby server unless you specifically need another country.
• Disable unnecessary multi-hop or double-VPN features, which add another layer to the connection.
• Run a speed test with the VPN off and on, using the same device and test server.

My recommendation

I'd choose NordVPN for the best all-around experience, or Proton VPN if privacy and international connections are your priorities. If you're chasing the highest possible WireGuard throughput, test PrivadoVPN as well.

One question so I can narrow this down to the best fit: What device will you mainly use the VPN on?

1. Your main device

Windows PC

Mac

Android phone

iPhone or iPad

Router or Linux

2. Budget

Free only

Affordable paid plan

Paid is fine for the best performance

3. Main use

Everyday browsing and streaming

Gaming and low ping

Large downloads and uploads

2. IVPN

(Best for explicit anti-throttling policy)

• WireGuard: Yes, supported in its apps.www.ivpn.net

• Throttling: IVPN explicitly says it has no monthly bandwidth limit and does not throttle connections for excessive bandwidth use.www.ivpn.net

• Best for: Privacy-conscious users who want a provider with a clear written commitment.

• Trade-off: Paid service; check its current plan and device limits.

3. Mullvad VPN

• WireGuard: Yes, with dedicated WireGuard servers.mullvad.net

• Throttling: I could verify WireGuard support, but not a sufficiently explicit current no-throttling guarantee to rank it above IVPN on that criterion.

• Best for: Users prioritizing privacy and a straightforward VPN subscription.

My verdict

A note about guarantees: None of these services can guarantee that your connection will never slow down. A provider can promise not to deliberately throttle you, but it cannot eliminate ISP restrictions, network congestion, or hardware limitations. Proton's own policy also contains an exception for excessive consumption on free servers.protonvpn.com+1
