Questions and answers
What are the best ultrasonic solutions for detecting leaks in industrial compressed air lines, and are there services available to help us monitor these leaks?
Detecting and managing compressed air leaks using ultrasound has evolved from traditional "point-and-listen" wand detectors to advanced acoustic imaging cameras that visually map sound onto a digital screen.
Industrial leak detection hardware generally falls into two distinct categories depending on your budget, precision needs, and environment:
1. Acoustic Imaging Cameras (Visual Ultrasound)
These handheld devices use an array of dozens or hundreds of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) microphones to isolate ultrasonic frequencies (2 kHz to upwards of 100 kHz) and overlay a visual "SoundMap" over a standard digital photo in real time. They can pinpoint leaks from dozens of feet away, even in loud industrial production environments, and automatically estimate leak rates and annual financial waste.[1][2]
Industry standard for robust build quality, exceptional background-noise filtering, and precise distance mapping.
Features up to 124 microphones, single-handed lightweight operation, and instant on-screen leak quantification and cost projection.[1][2][3]
2. Traditional Handheld Ultrasonic Detectors (Gooseneck / Contact Wands)
These units use heterodyning technology to translate inaudible high-frequency turbulent escape sounds (36 kHz - 42 kHz) down into the audible human hearing range via specialized noise-canceling headphones. They are budget-friendly alternatives to acoustic cameras, though they require a closer physical proximity to the pipework.
Superior AccuTrak VPE PRO Series Highly sensitive, excellent at isolating true leak signatures from competing mechanical background noise without wind or ambient interference.
A reliable, field-proven mechanical gooseneck tool for tracing pneumatic and compressed air lines.
An ergonomic, intuitive mid-range option well-suited for general maintenance technicians.
If you prefer not to purchase and manage the hardware internally, third-party industrial service providers offer comprehensive solutions:
What are the top-rated ultrasonic devices for spotting compressed air leaks in a factory setting, and are there companies that offer ongoing leak monitoring services?
For industrial compressed-air systems, I’d recommend evaluating ultrasonic leak detection cameras, handheld ultrasonic detectors, and recurring leak-survey or monitoring services. The best choice depends on whether your goal is to find leaks quickly across a large plant, equip your maintenance team to inspect lines routinely, or continuously track system performance.
Ultrasonic detection works by identifying the high-frequency sound generated by turbulent air escaping through a leak. It can locate leaks around pipe joints, fittings, hoses, valves, regulators, and condensate drains, often without shutting down production. Acoustic imaging cameras add a visual overlay that helps technicians pinpoint the leak in noisy industrial environments.

An alternative to the UE Systems handheld approach, with live sound and spectrogram displays, automated leak evaluation in units such as CFM or L/min, and digital documentation with photos and notes.
Pricing note: These are published prices found during research, not quotes. Confirm current pricing, included software, calibration, training, and service support with the supplier.
2. Yes — services can find, quantify, and help manage leaks
There are two different service models to consider:
Periodic ultrasonic surveys: A specialist inspects the plant, tags individual leaks, estimates air loss and cost, and provides a prioritized repair list. Some providers can also perform the repairs and return to verify them.
Ongoing monitoring: A service provider tracks compressed-air flow, pressure, compressor power, and related operating data to identify unusual consumption or developing losses. This is different from placing an ultrasonic sensor on every pipe: confirm exactly what the provider monitors and how quickly it alerts you.
Providers worth evaluating

4. What about continuous leak monitoring?
For a plant that wants to prevent leaks from going unnoticed between inspections, consider a layered approach:
Ultrasonic survey: Establish a baseline of leak locations, estimated CFM loss, and annual energy cost.
Repair and verify: Fix the highest-cost leaks first and repeat the survey to confirm that they have been resolved.
Monitor the system: Add flow, pressure, and compressor-power monitoring where appropriate, with alerts for unexpected consumption or abnormal operating patterns.
Repeat ultrasonic inspections: Schedule quarterly, semiannual, or annual surveys based on leak history, operating hours, and the cost of compressed air.
For an established plant, I would start with a comprehensive ultrasonic survey and a quantified repair plan before investing in permanent monitoring hardware. That establishes the baseline needed to measure whether later monitoring is delivering savings.
5. How to choose the right solution
Your situation
My recommendation
One plant, occasional leaks
Handheld detector or outsourced survey
Large, noisy production facility
Acoustic imaging camera
Multiple maintenance technicians
Digital detector with reporting software
Multiple facilities or recurring leaks
Standardized surveys plus centralized reporting
Need early warning between surveys
Flow/pressure/power monitoring combined with periodic ultrasound
When requesting quotes, ask for the estimated leak rate in CFM, annualized energy cost, leak location photographs, repair priorities, post-repair verification, and any available utility rebates. Also ask whether savings are estimated or measured.
A question to narrow this down
Are you primarily looking to buy equipment for your own maintenance team, hire a service provider to survey and repair leaks, or set up ongoing monitoring with alerts? And is your facility in the Leesburg/Northern Virginia area or somewhere else?
I can narrow the recommendations to the most suitable equipment and service options for your situation.
Yes. For a factory, I’d focus on industrial acoustic imagers rather than inexpensive handheld ultrasonic guns. They are much faster on a noisy production floor because they show the leak visually and, on the better models, estimate leak size/cost.
Top choices
Device
Best for
What stands out
Approx. current price
FLIR Si1-LD
Best overall for compressed-air leaks
96 MEMS microphones, 2–100 kHz, detection up to 427 ft, leak quantification, IP54
$9,899
Fluke ii905
Best for large/noisy factories
5 MP camera, SoundMap, LeakQ leak-size/cost estimation, up to 230 ft, 6-hour battery
Designed for noisy production facilities; visualizes compressed-air/gas/vacuum leaks and provides relative leak sizing
roughly $9,000
Fluke ULD-420 / similar handhelds
Budget/occasional inspections
Traditional ultrasonic receiver; useful when you don't need an acoustic camera
roughly $1,500–$2,400
The FLIR Si1-LD is particularly compelling right now: FLIR specifies a minimum detectable leak rate of 0.01 L/min at 2.5 m, a 2–100 kHz bandwidth, and operation up to 130 m/427 ft. It was also named Computer & Automation's 2026 Product of the Year in measurement technology.
The Fluke ii905 is the stronger choice if you need a formal leak-management program. Its LeakQ system estimates leak size, rate and cost, while the 7-inch display overlays the ultrasonic source on the visible image. Fluke specifies detection out to 70 m/230 ft.
My pick: For a maintenance department primarily concerned with compressed-air losses, I'd shortlist the FLIR Si1-LD and Fluke ii905 and run a side-by-side trial in your actual factory. In very noisy plants, acoustic imaging can be dramatically easier than a conventional ultrasonic gun; a Fluke case study at a bakery found that the conventional ultrasonic gun struggled with the facility's noise while an acoustic imager pinpointed hidden leaks.
What about ongoing monitoring services?
Yes—but there are two different models worth distinguishing.
1. Recurring professional leak surveys
Companies can come into the plant periodically, scan the compressed-air network, quantify leaks, produce a repair-priority report, and return to verify repairs.
Atlas Copco offers AIRScan leak audits using acoustic detection, including logging, quantification and costing of leaks. It also offers ongoing compressed-air service/optimization programs.
Brabazon provides ultrasonic compressed-air leak detection and repair services for industrial facilities in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan and Missouri.
UE Systems supports formal ultrasound predictive-maintenance programs, including leak surveys, reporting software, training and remote ultrasound monitoring.
2. True 24/7 continuous monitoring
This is increasingly possible, but it's different from putting a technician in the plant once a quarter. Fixed ultrasonic sensors can monitor selected critical areas continuously and generate alerts when leak signatures appear. UE Systems, for example, offers remote/online ultrasound solutions such as 4Site, 4Cast and UltraTrak 850s.
There are also newer industrial-IoT offerings that combine fixed ultrasonic sensors with flow/pressure data and analytics to identify leaks continuously.
One important caveat: Atlas Copco's SMARTLINK is continuous monitoring of the compressed-air equipment/system, but it isn't identical to having ultrasonic sensors listening to every leak point. Atlas Copco also offers AIRScan acoustic leak surveys, so the two can complement each other.
What I'd deploy in a factory
For most medium-to-large plants, I'd use a hybrid program:
Acoustic camera — quarterly/monthly plant-wide leak surveys.
Leak database — record location, estimated CFM, annual energy cost and repair status.
Repair verification — rescan after every significant repair.
Annual system-wide audit — quantify total leakage and savings.
That gives you something much more useful than simply "finding leaks": a continuously managed energy-loss program with a measurable ROI. Fluke specifically emphasizes leak-rate quantification because it lets maintenance teams prioritize repairs by economic impact and verify savings afterward.
If you tell me roughly your factory size (e.g. 50k/250k/1M sq. ft.), number of compressors, and whether you're looking for a device purchase or an outsourced service, I can narrow this to a 3-option shortlist with estimated acquisition/service costs and an ROI/payback comparison.
Locating compressed air leaks via ultrasound has evolved dramatically. Modern tools range from traditional point-and-listen gooseneck units to cutting-edge Acoustic Imaging Cameras that let you visually "see" sound.
