If your dog has separation anxiety and destroys ordinary wire or plastic crates, I’d focus on heavy-duty kennels specifically designed for escape artists, rather than just a crate advertised as “indestructible.”
The strongest starting point is Impact Dog Crates’ High Anxiety model. There are also options from GUNNER and heavy-duty steel-crate sellers, depending on your budget and whether the kennel will be used indoors or for travel.
Best places to buy an escape-resistant dog kennel
1. Impact Dog Crates
(Best starting point)
Best for severe crate escape behavior
Their High Anxiety crate features reinforced aluminum panels and a five-point locking system. The manufacturer offers a lifetime dog-damage guarantee specifically for this model, which is a significant advantage for dogs that physically break crates.
I need a kennel that can withstand a dog with severe separation anxiety who keeps breaking out of standard crates. What are my options for heavy-duty, escape-proof containment?
I'm worried my new puppy will chew through a fabric crate. What's the most secure heavy duty dog crate?
The G1 has a double-wall construction, a key-locking door and backup latches. It's a robust option for travel and outdoor use. However, its lifetime manufacturer's warranty excludes destruction caused by the dog, so read the warranty before buying for a destructive indoor dog.
Manufacturer-listed starting price: $550; larger sizes cost more.
A heavy steel-tube frame, close-set bars and dual door latches make this a more robust option than ordinary wire crates. It is bulky, and the manufacturer's warranty reportedly excludes damage caused by the dog.
Typical reported price range: $200–$350; confirm current retailer listings.
Chewy sells the Frisco Ultimate Heavy Duty Steel crate, with dual locks and a substantial steel construction. Compare its dimensions and locking mechanism against your dog's previous escape methods before choosing it.
A lower-cost alternative to premium aluminum kennels, though still a substantial purchase.
For a dog that has already bent metal bars, broken latches or chewed through a crate: start with Impact High Anxiety.
For a kennel mainly used in a vehicle: compare the GUNNER G1.
For a more moderate budget: investigate the ProSelect Empire or Frisco heavy-duty steel crate.
One important caution: no crate is completely safe for every panicking dog. A dog that frantically claws, bites or throws itself against a crate can suffer broken teeth, injured paws or other serious injuries. A secure kennel should be paired with a veterinarian or qualified separation-anxiety behavior professional, rather than relying on stronger hardware alone.
Let me narrow this down for your dog
What breed or approximate weight is your dog, and what is the most you've spent on crates so far? I can use that to narrow the options to the best-sized kennels and more affordable alternatives.
Dealing with a dog that destroys standard wire or plastic crates due to separation anxiety is stressful—and potentially dangerous for your pup’s teeth and paws. For severe anxiety, you need heavy-duty, reinforced construction (like thick aluminum or square steel tubes) with escape-proof latches that a dog can't paw or chew open.
Top brands and retailers specializing in heavy-duty, high-anxiety dog kennels include:
Impact Dog Crates (High Anxiety Crate) : Widely considered the gold standard for severe separation anxiety. They make a dedicated Impact Dog Crates High Anxiety Dog Crate built from heavy-gauge aluminum that is significantly thicker than standard crates, featuring smooth interior ventilation holes (instead of bars they can grab with teeth) and multiple butterfly latches plus a steel paddle latch.
Lilly & Max : Offers extra-large heavy-duty carbon steel options like the Lilly & Max 60 inch Extra Large Heavy Duty Dog Crate which features dual locks and a reinforced frame tailored for high-anxiety escape artists.
Chewy : Carries several heavy-duty steel options directly on their site, such as the Yafylly Heavy Duty Indestructible Metal Dog Crate and the Xbrigh Heavy Duty Indestructible Escape Proof Steel Dog Crate . These use thick reinforced steel tubes and dual slide-bolt/pin locks.[1][2]
Garvee : Sells online alternatives like the Garvee Heavy Duty Escape-Proof Dog Crate which features multi-door access and heavy-gauge steel framing designed to resist bending and chewing.
If you'd like, let me know:
Your dog's breed or weight
How they usually try to escape (chewing bars, forcing doors, bending wire)
I can help you decide which material and latch style would suit your dog best.
If your puppy is a serious chewer, I would skip fabric and ordinary wire crates entirely. The key is a crate with solid panels or welded heavy-gauge construction and a latch the dog can't manipulate.
This is the one I'd choose if your priority is maximum containment. Impact says it uses thicker aluminum, four additional butterfly latches plus a steel paddle latch, and small ½-inch ventilation openings that prevent a dog from getting its teeth into the openings. Most unusually, the High Anxiety model has a Lifetime Dog Damage Guarantee—if your dog actually breaks it, Impact says they'll repair or replace it.
The downside is substantial: it's expensive and heavy. Current product listings are around $1,250, depending on size.
Best value in a true steel "tank": ProSelect Empire
If ~$1,250 is more than you want to spend, this is the heavy-duty crate I'd look at first. It uses 20-gauge steel reinforced with ½-inch steel tubes, a ¾-inch tube frame, and dual door latches. It's extremely heavy—one medium listing is about 100 lb—but that's part of why it's difficult for a dog to move or destroy.
Its important weakness: the warranty doesn't cover damage caused by the dog, unlike the Impact High Anxiety.
If you need something for travel
A hard-sided kennel is preferable to a soft crate for a determined chewer. The RuffLand roto-molded kennels are substantially less extreme than the Impact/ProSelect cages, but they're durable, don't give a puppy exposed metal bars to chew, and are much more practical for vehicle use.
Durable crate that's actually practical for travel
One other thing: if your puppy is frantically trying to escape, rather than simply chewing because they're teething, don't rely on a stronger crate alone. Dogs can seriously injure teeth, claws, or noses during escape attempts. The crate needs to be appropriately sized and introduced positively.
If you tell me your puppy's breed/expected adult weight and your budget (e.g. <$300, <$500, or "money no object"), I can narrow this down to the specific size and model I'd buy.
The Xbrigh Heavy Duty Indestructible Steel Escape Proof Dog Crate (available on Chewy ) is one of the most secure, heavy-duty options available for aggressive chewers and high-anxiety puppies.
Top Heavy-Duty Crate Options
Features reinforced steel tubes, a multi-layered non-toxic coating, and secure double-door locks to prevent clever escape artists from opening latches.
Combines a heavy-duty metal frame with front and top access doors, lockable wheels, and a sturdy base that resists destructive chewing.
Key Features to Look For
Material : Welded steel or reinforced square tubes rather than thin wire or plastic.
Latches : Dual-point slide-bolt locks or escape-proof gravity latches that dogs cannot manipulate with their paws or teeth.
Flooring : Metal grate floors with a removable bottom tray prevent a puppy from chewing through plastic pans or digging at the floor liner.
If you want to narrow down your choice, let me know:
What breed or mix is your puppy?
Do they show signs of separation anxiety or active clawing/chewing?
When a puppy has severe separation anxiety and starts actively destroying or escaping standard wire/plastic crates, you need a heavy-duty, escape-proof option. Standard wire crates can actually become dangerous if an anxious dog bends the bars and catches a tooth or paw.
The gold standard for high-anxiety escape artists is the Impact High Anxiety Dog Crate , though there are a few heavy-duty alternatives depending on your budget and your puppy's specific chewing style.
Impact High Anxiety Dog Crate – The undisputed gold standard for severe separation anxiety. It is constructed from heavy-duty, thick aluminum alloy engineered to withstand up to 500 pounds of force. Instead of flimsy wire gaps where a dog can wedge their jaw or teeth, it features tiny circular ventilation holes and multiple secure butterfly latches alongside a steel paddle latch. It is a massive splurge (often over $1,000), but it is widely considered inescapable and comes with a solid damage/replacement guarantee. You can view the details directly on the Impact Dog Crates High Anxiety Dog Crate Page.
Frisco Ultimate Heavy Duty Steel Crate – A fantastic, more budget-friendly alternative available on Chewy (or reviewed via Dogster's Best Crates Guide ). Made from 22-gauge steel with reinforced tubing and strategically placed dual-door locks that are out of a puppy's reach. It provides heavy-duty containment against chewing and digging without hitting that four-figure price tag.
ProSelect Empire Dog Cage – Another ultra-tough steel option made specifically for powerful, destructive dogs. It features heavy-duty 0.5-inch steel tubes welded to strong steel frame panels with dual-locking doors. It sits lower on the price spectrum than aluminum high-anxiety specialty crates while remaining virtually chew-proof.
Dakota 283 G3 High-Security Kennel – If your puppy prefers a dark, den-like "rotomolded" plastic environment rather than metal bars, this heavy-duty single-piece polyethylene kennel features a high-security keyed paddle latch. Because it has no internal bars or exposed edges to chew on, it's great for dogs who gnaw compulsively on traditional crate wires.
To help narrow down which crate style fits best, let me know:
What breed or mix is your puppy and how much do they weigh?
Are they chewing the bars, trying to bend the door , or scratching at the floor?
If your puppy is destroying crates, doors, bedding, and anything nearby, you’re probably looking for an escape-resistant crate, not a normal “heavy-duty” wire crate. There is no truly indestructible crate for every dog, but a few are built specifically for extreme chewers and escape artists.
My top picks for a destructive puppy with separation anxiety
1. Impact Dog Crates High Anxiety Crate — strongest choice for true escape artists
Best for: Dogs that have already bent wire crates, popped latches, or injured themselves trying to escape.
Thick aluminum construction
Enclosed sides reduce visual stimulation (helpful for some anxious dogs)
Heavy-duty locking system
Designed specifically for high-anxiety escape behavior
Downside: Very expensive and heavy. It is a containment solution, not a treatment for separation anxiety itself.
2. ProSelect Empire Dog Cage — “tank-like” steel option
Best for: Large, powerful dogs that need a stationary crate.
Reinforced steel construction
Dual latches
Extremely heavy compared with normal crates
Downside: Not convenient to move, and many heavy-duty crates are designed to prevent escape rather than address panic behavior.
Best for: Dogs that destroy standard wire crates but aren’t extreme escape artists.
Steel construction
Designed for dogs that have escaped ordinary crates
More affordable than premium aluminum crates
What I would avoid for a separation-anxiety dog
Soft-sided crates: easy to shred.
Cheap “indestructible” wire crates: many fail at the door latch or corners rather than the bars.
Oversized crates: a dog that is panicking may have more room to build momentum against the walls.
Important: separation anxiety changes the answer
If your puppy is destroying things only when left alone (scratching doors, drooling heavily, screaming, trying to break out), the crate may keep the house safe but can also become a place where the dog rehearses panic. A stronger crate works best alongside gradual alone-time training. If your puppy is hurting teeth, paws, or nails trying to escape, it’s worth discussing with a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional.
If you tell me:
puppy’s breed and adult expected size,
age,
what they’ve destroyed so far (wire crate? plastic crate? doors?), and
what happens when you leave (barking, drooling, escape attempts, accidents),
I can narrow this down to the right crate style and size.
