Boston Whaler holds a clear lead for used fishing boats, cited often for durable unsinkable hulls and resale value. Grady-White becomes the primary choice when buyers focus specifically on small center console models.
Buying a pre-owned fishing boat can be an excellent way to get more boat for your money, but the key is to evaluate the hull, engine, maintenance history, and total cost of ownership—not just the asking price. A boat that looks clean and runs well during a short test can still hide expensive problems.
Here’s a practical checklist to help you find a reliable fishing boat and avoid costly surprises.
1. The 8 most important things to inspect
1. Hull and structural condition
Look for cracks, deep scratches, blisters, soft spots, and signs of previous repairs.
Check the transom (where the motor mounts) for flex, cracks, or water intrusion.
Inspect the floor and stringers for softness or rot, particularly on older fiberglass boats.
Look for corrosion, impact damage, or leaks around through-hull fittings.
Red flag: A soft transom or rotten structural core can turn an inexpensive boat into a major repair project.

Buying a pre-owned fishing boat is an exciting investment, but it requires a careful inspection to ensure you aren't inheriting costly mechanical or structural issues. Focus your evaluation on these key areas to guarantee good value and reliable performance:

I need to find some pre-owned center console fishing boats. What are the different sizes and deck layouts available on the market?
I'm looking for a reliable used boat for fishing. What are the best brands for a small center console?
Ask for engine make, model, year, hours, and service records.
Insist on a genuinely cold start; a seller who warms the engine before you arrive may be concealing starting issues.
Check for oil leaks, unusual smoke, abnormal noises, corrosion, and warning alarms.
Have a marine mechanic check compression or leak-down results where appropriate, scan engine diagnostics if supported, and inspect the lower unit or drive.
On an outboard, inspect the propeller, skeg, and signs of impact damage.
Red flag: Overheating, low or uneven compression, metal in gear oil, or a seller refusing an independent inspection.
3. Electrical systems and electronics
Test the battery, charging system, bilge pump, navigation lights, horn, switches, and gauges.
Check the wiring for corrosion, loose connections, exposed splices, and amateur repairs.
Test the fish finder, GPS/chartplotter, trolling motor, and livewell pumps.
Verify that electronics power up reliably and that transducers and antennas are installed properly.
Red flag: Widespread electrical problems or tangled, unprotected wiring.
4. Boat-specific weak points
Aluminum boats: Inspect rivets, welds, seams, dents, corrosion, and leaks.
Fiberglass boats: Look for stress cracks, delamination, blistering, and poorly repaired damage.
Bass boats: Check the transom, deck, livewells, trolling motor mount, and carpeted deck for soft spots.
Deep-V fishing boats: Inspect the keel, chines, hull bottom, and trailer bunks for impact damage and wear.
A boat's construction and intended use determine which problems matter most.
5. Sea trial and handling
Take the boat out on the water before committing to the purchase.
Confirm it starts cold, idles smoothly, accelerates properly, and reaches an appropriate operating RPM under load.
Test steering, shifting, reverse, trim, and stability.
Watch engine temperature, oil pressure, charging voltage, and warning indicators.
Check for excessive vibration, unusual noises, water entering the bilge, or difficulty getting on plane.
Red flag: The seller will only demonstrate the boat on a trailer or at idle.
Inspect the frame for rust, cracks, or bent sections.
Check tires, date codes, wheel bearings, hubs, lights, brakes, winch, coupler, and safety chains.
Verify the trailer's capacity and condition are appropriate for the fully loaded boat.
Confirm your vehicle can tow the actual combined weight, including fuel, batteries, gear, and passengers.
Red flag: A neglected trailer can add substantial cost and create a serious road-safety hazard.
7. Fishing equipment and accessories
Test the livewell, aerator, bilge pump, rod lockers, storage lids, seats, anchors, trolling motor, and batteries. Check whether the boat includes the accessories you would otherwise need to buy.
A boat with a working trolling motor, quality sonar, a serviceable trailer, and good batteries may represent better value than a cheaper, bare-bones alternative.
8. Ownership records and legal status
Match the hull identification number (HIN) to the paperwork.
Verify ownership, title or registration requirements, and any applicable liens.
Ask for maintenance invoices, previous damage disclosures, insurance claims if available, and any records of engine or hull repairs.
Check the engine serial number and confirm what is included in the sale.
Red flag: Missing or inconsistent paperwork, altered identification numbers, or unclear ownership.
2. How to know if you're getting good value
Don't compare boats on asking price alone. Compare similar boats with the same hull type, model year, engine, equipment, and overall condition.
For example, a $12,000 boat needing $3,000 in engine work, $800 in trailer repairs, and $700 in safety equipment costs $16,500 before ongoing ownership expenses.

3. Budget for costs beyond the purchase
Remember to account for:
Fuel and engine servicing.
Winterization and storage, if applicable.
Registration, insurance, and launch fees.
Replacement batteries, tires, and trailer bearings.
Repairs to the engine, electronics, or hull.
A marine survey and any necessary haul-out.
Keep a separate repair reserve rather than spending your entire budget on the boat itself.
4. Get an independent inspection before paying
For a higher-value boat, or one with an inboard engine, complicated systems, or a questionable history, hire an independent marine surveyor. For smaller fishing boats, a qualified marine mechanic's engine inspection is particularly important. Depending on the boat, you may want both professionals.
A good pre-purchase evaluation can include:
Hull and structural inspection, sometimes with the boat lifted out of the water.
Engine diagnostics and mechanical testing.
An on-water sea trial.
Testing of onboard systems and safety equipment.
A written report identifying defects and likely repairs.
Make your offer contingent on satisfactory inspection and a sea trial where practical. Significant findings give you grounds to negotiate, request repairs, or walk away.

My biggest piece of advice: Buy the best-maintained boat you can afford, not necessarily the newest or the cheapest. A clean, well-documented boat with a healthy engine is usually a better investment than a newer boat with hidden structural or mechanical problems.
Want advice tailored to your budget?
What type of fishing boat are you considering, and roughly how much do you want to spend? For example, an aluminum fishing boat for lakes, a fiberglass bass boat, or a larger boat for Great Lakes fishing will each have different priorities.
When shopping for a reliable used small center console (roughly 15 to 20 feet), you want a brand known for a durable hull, good resale value, and a layout that maximizes fishing space.
Top-tier and budget-friendly brands heavily sought-after on the used market include:
Boston Whaler (The Montauk & Dauntless Series): Widely considered the gold standard for small center consoles. Famous for their legendary "unsinkable" foam-sandwich hull construction, older Whalers (like a 15' or 17' Montauk) hold their value remarkably well and clean up easily.
Carolina Skiff (JVX or DLX/LS Series): If you want maximum deck space, shallow-water capability, and a budget-friendly price tag, Carolina Skiff is unmatched. They are ultra-durable, wood-free, incredibly stable, and easy to maintain.
Scout Boats (Sportfish Series): Scout started out building smaller center consoles and punches above its weight class in fit, finish, and aesthetic details. A used Scout 175 Sportfish offers a smoother, drier ride than a traditional utility skiff while keeping a tight footprint.
Mako (Pro Skiff Series): Mako has a long heritage as a serious fisherman’s boat. Models in the 17-foot range provide a solid, no-nonsense layout with plenty of rod holders and livewells built for inshore and nearshore angling.
Key West (1720 / 176cc or Similar): Highly respected for offering a great compromise between a smooth-riding V-hull and family comfort. They are well-built, unpretentious, and widely available on the used market at sensible prices.
Buyer's Tip
Assuming you're buying used, I'd be less concerned about the brand of the hull and more concerned about the overall condition of the boat and brand of the engine.

Where will you mostly fish (shallow flats/bays vs. choppy coastal bays/nearshore)?
For a small used center console, I’d focus on Boston Whaler, Key West, Sea Hunt, Sportsman, Scout, and Grady-White. These brands have established reputations and broad used-market support.
Boston Whaler — excellent construction/resale; Montauk and Dauntless are worth considering.
Key West — practical, fishing-focused, often good value used.
Sea Hunt — strong value for a 19–23' fishing boat.
Sportsman — good fishing layouts and modern features.
Scout — higher-end fit/finish; good if comfort matters too.
Grady-White — excellent ride/build, though used boats tend to cost more.
For Florida inshore fishing, I’d particularly look at 18–21 feet, with a four-stroke outboard and a documented maintenance history. Condition and engine history matter more than the badge on a used boat.
