Satellite weather routing

How satellite weather routing works for offshore navigation

Satellite weather routing combines satellite observations, ocean and atmospheric forecasts, vessel performance data, and route-optimization software to help you choose a safer, more efficient path across open water.

Instead of plotting a straight line from departure to destination, a weather-routing system evaluates how winds, waves, currents, and developing weather systems will affect your vessel along different possible routes and at different times.

The key idea is that the shortest route is not always the fastest, safest, or most fuel-efficient route. A modest detour can help a vessel avoid heavy seas, reduce fuel consumption, or arrive sooner by taking advantage of favorable currents and winds.

1. Where the data comes from

Satellite weather routing doesn't rely on satellite pictures alone. It combines several types of observations with forecasts and measurements from other sources.

•

Ocean surface winds

Satellite radar and microwave instruments estimate wind speed and direction over vast ocean areas. These measurements help identify strong wind fields, storm circulation, and favorable sailing or steaming conditions.coastwatch.noaa.gov+4

---

•

Wave height, period, and direction

Satellite altimeters measure sea-surface height variations that help estimate significant wave height. Other satellite radar observations can provide information about wave patterns. Numerical wave models then forecast how wind waves and swell will evolve.www.ecmwf.int+1

---

•

Sea-surface temperature and ocean circulation

Temperature imagery helps identify ocean fronts and features associated with currents. Satellite observations complement ocean circulation models, which estimate current speeds and directions that can help or hinder a vessel.oceanservice.noaa.gov+1

---

•

Storms, clouds, and atmospheric conditions

Weather satellites monitor cloud systems and provide atmospheric information used in forecasting. Combined with numerical weather models, these observations help forecasters anticipate storm development, precipitation, and changing winds.www.ecmwf.int+1

One important distinction: satellites observe certain conditions at the time of measurement; they do not directly tell you what the weather will be along your route tomorrow. Forecast models use those observations, together with buoys, ships, and other measurements, to predict future conditions.marinenavigation.noaa.gov+1

2. How the route is calculated

Satellite and ocean observations

Winds, waves, temperatures, storm imagery

Weather and ocean forecast models

Predicted winds, waves, currents, and weather over time

Vessel performance model

Speed, heading, fuel consumption, and sea-state limits

Route optimization

Compare alternative tracks and departure times

Recommended route and ongoing updates

Waypoint track, ETA, expected fuel use, and hazard alerts

This is the basic process:

1. Build a forecast picture. The system combines the latest observations with numerical weather and ocean models to estimate conditions across the route and over the planned voyage.
2. Model your vessel. It accounts for vessel speed, engine performance, fuel consumption, and how wind and waves affect progress.
3. Evaluate possible tracks. The software tests alternative routes through the forecast fields, often dividing the ocean into a grid of positions and times.
4. Apply safety constraints. It can penalize or exclude areas with excessive wave heights, dangerous winds, restricted waters, or other specified hazards.
5. Select a route. Depending on your priorities, it may minimize voyage time, fuel consumption, or a weighted combination of factors.
6. Recalculate as conditions change. Updated forecasts and actual onboard observations can prompt a revised route.

The underlying weather and wave forecasting process is described by ECMWF, while NOAA explains how marine forecasts combine observations, atmospheric models, wave models, and ocean-current models.www.ecmwf.int+3

3. What makes a route safer and more efficient?

Imagine you're planning an offshore passage from Florida toward Bermuda. A direct track may be attractive on a chart, but changing winds, swell, currents, or a developing storm could make another track preferable.

•

A routing system compares trade-offs such as these:

Wave height alone is not enough to judge safety. Wave period, wave direction relative to the vessel, loading condition, vessel design, and the possibility of unusually large individual waves also matter.www.ecmwf.int+1

A good route planner therefore needs vessel-specific operating limits, not just a general weather map.

4. Tools you can use to plan a real voyage

These are useful starting points, depending on whether you want to inspect weather data yourself or use a dedicated routing system.

These tools serve different purposes: a weather viewer helps you interpret conditions, a chartplotter supports navigation, and a routing service evaluates alternative tracks. Check each product's current features, subscriptions, and offline capabilities before relying on it offshore.

5. A practical workflow for safe offshore routing

1. Define your passage. Enter departure and destination coordinates, vessel type, cruising speed, departure window, and fuel or time constraints.
2. Review warnings first. Check official marine forecasts, tropical cyclone advisories where relevant, gale warnings, and other applicable warnings.
3. Compare forecast models. Examine wind, significant wave height, wave period, swell direction, and ocean currents. Investigate substantial disagreement between models.
4. Set vessel-specific limits. Establish acceptable wind and sea-state thresholds based on the vessel's design, loading, stability, operating guidance, and crew capability.
5. Compare alternative routes. Evaluate the direct track against routes that avoid forecast hazards or use favorable conditions. Compare ETA, fuel consumption, and exposure to adverse seas.
6. Validate the route on nautical charts. Confirm water depths, navigational hazards, traffic separation schemes, restricted areas, and other charted constraints. Weather routing does not replace passage planning.
7. Monitor and reassess underway. Refresh forecasts as new runs become available, compare them with onboard observations, and recalculate if conditions or the vessel's situation change.

For U.S. waters, NOAA's marine forecasts and predictions provide access to wind, wave, current, and official marine forecast guidance. Its Ocean Prediction Center also provides offshore and high-seas forecasts and warnings.marinenavigation.noaa.gov+1

6. What satellite routing cannot guarantee

Satellite-assisted routing is a decision-support tool, not a guarantee of safe passage.

• Forecast uncertainty grows with time. A route that looks optimal several days ahead may need adjustment as weather systems evolve.
• Satellite coverage isn't continuous at every point. Some measurements are intermittent, and cloud cover or sensor limitations can affect particular observations.
• Wave statistics don't describe every wave. Significant wave height is a useful summary, not a maximum-wave prediction.
• Local conditions can differ from model grids. Fronts, currents, coastal effects, and rapidly developing storms may create conditions the route model doesn't fully capture.
• The vessel and crew remain critical. Stability, loading, fatigue, equipment condition, communications, and the ability to divert or seek shelter all influence the actual risk.

For longer offshore passages, use forecast ensembles where available, maintain a safety margin, and preserve access to independent forecasts and reliable onboard navigation.marinenavigation.noaa.gov+1

Let's tailor this to your offshore route

I can help you choose an appropriate data and routing workflow for your particular voyage. The most important starting point is the type of vessel and the passage you're planning.

1. What kind of vessel are you routing?

Sailing yacht

Motor yacht or recreational powerboat

Commercial ship or tanker

Offshore work vessel

---

2. What area or passage are you considering?

[Input placeholder: e.g. Miami to Bermuda, Atlantic crossing] (Current value unavailable.)

---

3. What is your primary routing goal?

Safety first, then efficiency

Minimum fuel consumption

Shortest voyage time

Balance safety, time, and fuel

---

4. What connectivity will you have offshore?

Satellite internet available

Intermittent satellite or GRIB downloads

Mostly offline

Not sure yet

[Build my offshore routing plan]

Yes. For a solo circumnavigation, there are several viable approaches, but they fall into two distinct categories: automated onboard routing and human weather-routing services.

Best options

1. PredictWind — probably the strongest fit

For a solo circumnavigator, I'd put PredictWind at the top of the list.

Its Offshore App can download GRIBs, weather routes, departure plans, GMDSS forecasts and satellite imagery over satellite connections. Its routing is performed ashore using high-resolution forecast data, so the boat doesn't have to download huge weather datasets.help.predictwind.com

It supports Iridium GO!, Iridium GO exec and Starlink, and Standard/Professional subscriptions provide the satellite-capable routing functionality.help.predictwind.com

The particularly attractive architecture for a circumnavigation is:

Boat → Iridium/Starlink → PredictWind cloud → route calculated → compact route returned to boat.

That minimizes satellite data consumption.

PredictWind Offshore App

2. SailGrib

SailGrib WR is a more hands-on alternative. It actually performs the routing in the application, using your boat's polar, weather GRIBs, currents and routing constraints. It has explicit optimization for Iridium GO! and can obtain GRIBs through direct satellite downloads or email.sailgrib.com

This is appealing if you want to be able to change assumptions and rerun the route yourself offshore, rather than simply accepting a cloud-generated route.

One caveat: SailGrib WR is primarily an Android solution.

3. LuckGrib

LuckGrib is another particularly interesting option for an ocean sailor. Its Offshore Data service is explicitly designed to deliver forecast data via satellite, including Iridium GO! and RedPort Optimizer, and it includes weather routing on iPad/iPhone.luckgrib.com

I'd consider this alongside PredictWind if you're an Apple/iPad-heavy sailor.

4. Human weather routers

For a solo circumnavigation, I wouldn't necessarily rely exclusively on automated routing.

A professional router can interpret things an algorithm may not adequately capture—forecast uncertainty, developing tropical systems, unusual ocean-current behavior, model disagreement, and whether a forecast is deteriorating enough that you should change plans.

Commanders' Weather, for example, provides cruising/delivery routing forecasts with weather-pattern analysis, routing suggestions using winds and major currents, and daily monitoring when you provide your position.www.commandersweather.com

Ocean-Pro Weather similarly provides customized open-ocean routing and says it monitors passages for private yachts worldwide, communicating via satellite phone, email or SSB.www.ocean-pro.com

5. FastSeas / OpenSail — worth knowing about

There are also newer low-bandwidth approaches.

FastSeas can return routing and departure-planning results offshore via Iridium GO!, Sailmail, Winlink and several satellite messengers.test.fastseas.com

OpenSail is explicitly designed around the constraints of offshore satellite connectivity: it can accept a routing request by email over Iridium and return a text plan plus GPX route.opensail.app

That's an intriguing backup system because it doesn't require you to have a high-bandwidth satellite internet connection.

What I'd use on a circumnavigation

I would actually build redundancy into the weather system, rather than choosing one provider:

Primary

• PredictWind Professional
• Iridium GO exec or equivalent global satellite connection
• onboard navigation system with your own boat polar

Independent cross-check

• LuckGrib or SailGrib + independently obtained GRIBs

Human backup

• A professional weather router for particularly consequential passages

Safety sources

• GMDSS/met-office warnings
• Navtex/SSB where available
• conventional marine forecasts
• your own barometer/weather observations

The important distinction is that weather routing is not weather forecasting. A route can be mathematically optimal given a forecast that turns out to be wrong. For a solo sailor crossing the Indian or Southern Ocean, I would want to see multiple models and forecast trends, not just follow a single optimized magenta line.

PredictWind is especially strong here because it lets you compare multiple forecast models and its routing incorporates winds, waves, currents and your vessel characteristics.explore.predictwind.com

If you tell me your boat type/length, expected cruising speed, and whether you're planning a traditional eastward or westward circumnavigation, I can narrow this down to a recommended satellite + weather-routing setup, including hardware, subscriptions, redundancy and approximate annual cost.
