Rev holds a wide lead across audio-to-text conversion for legal records and attorney meetings. For legal secretaries handling dictations, SpeakWrite is the usual answer.
For a legal secretary who transcribes attorney dictations, I would prioritize accuracy with legal terminology, confidentiality, speaker recognition, and compatibility with Microsoft Word over simply choosing the cheapest speech-to-text app.
The best service depends on whether you're transcribing short attorney voice notes, lengthy legal dictations, or recordings of depositions and client meetings. Those are different use cases, and a general-purpose transcription tool isn't always the best fit for a law office.

What about AI transcription services?
General-purpose tools can be convenient for turning existing audio recordings into text, but I would not automatically choose a meeting-transcription app for confidential attorney dictation. For legal work, confirm whether audio is uploaded, how long it is retained, whether it can be used for model training, and what contractual privacy protections the provider offers.
Also, no matter which service you choose, proofread the transcript carefully. Names, dates, dollar amounts, case citations, negations and legal terms can be misheard, and AI-generated text should not be treated as a verified legal document.
Which would I choose for your job?
My first choice would be Philips SpeechLive if attorneys record dictations for you to transcribe. If they expect the words to appear on your screen as they speak, I would evaluate Dragon Legal first.
One important distinction: a dictation workflow is different from a service that transcribes an uploaded audio file. Choosing the right type can save you significant time.
Let me narrow this down to the best option for your specific work.
1. How do the attorneys give you dictations?
They send recorded voice files for me to transcribe.
They dictate live into the computer while I type or edit.
When choosing a transcription option for legal dictation , your best choice depends entirely on your workflow: whether you want real-time self-dictation (speech-to-text as you speak) or file-based transcription (uploading audio recordings for human or AI processing).
The top options on the market tailored for legal professionals include:
Dragon Legal Anywhere (by Nuance/Microsoft): The gold standard for lawyer dictation. It is a cloud-hosted, professional-grade speech recognition engine pre-trained on hundreds of millions of words of legal documentation. It boasts up to 99% out-of-the-box accuracy for complex legal terminology, Latin maxims, and citations, and allows you to dictate directly into any application (like Microsoft Word or your practice management software) using voice commands for formatting and editing.[1][2]
Braina Pro: A popular alternative PC-based assistant and speech-to-text software that features robust legal vocabulary recognition. It lets you dictate straight into third-party software, emails, or legal forms without requiring extensive voice training.
2. Outsourced & File-Based Transcription Services

Do you prefer self-dictating directly into your computer/phone, or uploading audio files for an external service to type up?
What practice management or word processing software does your firm rely on daily?
For legal dictation, I’d narrow the options based on whether you need a person to transcribe your dictation, software that converts your voice to text, or a service that handles the entire dictation-to-document workflow. Those are different products, and choosing the right category can save you considerable time and money.
For work involving privileged client information, I’d prioritize confidentiality, legal terminology, accuracy, and a reliable way to review the final document—not just speed or price.

Top-rated legal transcription services for secretaries (2026)
