Northern Brewer holds a wide lead as the primary recommendation for first-time homebrewers shopping for starter kits. Craft A Brew becomes the usual answer when buyers specifically search for all-inclusive kits for their first batch.
If you love IPAs, my top recommendation is a Northern Brewer 5-gallon starter kit paired with a dedicated IPA recipe kit. It gives you enough beer to share, room to experiment with different hops, and a better foundation for the hobby than a simple pre-hopped beer-making set. Current homebrew guides also highlight Northern Brewer's IPA-focused kits for beginners.
The key is choosing a setup that lets you control hop aroma, bitterness, and fermentation temperature—the things that make a homebrew IPA go from decent to genuinely delicious.

Northern Brewer Homebrewing Starter Kit with Chinook IPA Recipe
Approximately $100–$160, depending on package
A full-size setup for someone who wants to make brewing a regular hobby. The Chinook IPA recipe is a good starting point for exploring classic piney, citrus-forward hop character.
I am planning to brew my own beer. Who sells starter kits?
Summary
Northern Brewer is the usual answer for starter kit retailers, highlighted for options like its Brew Share Enjoy package.
I'm interested in homebrewing beer. What's the best starter equipment kit?
See where your brand stands in this ranking
Why I'd choose it: a 5-gallon batch, reusable equipment, and a path to experimenting with other IPA recipes. Check whether the particular package includes the kettle and bottling equipment before buying.
Best if you're new to brewing or have limited kitchen space. The one-gallon batch makes roughly 8–10 pints, and the single-hop approach lets you learn what Cascade hops contribute.
Why it's great for IPA fans: a relatively inexpensive way to learn the brewing process before investing in larger batches.
My pick for someone who already owns basic brewing equipment and wants a bold, hop-forward West Coast IPA. The recipe combines Simcoe, Citra, and Mosaic hops for layered citrus, tropical fruit, and resinous notes.
Important: this is an ingredient kit, not a complete equipment starter set.
A compact option if you prefer juicy, softer bitterness and a hazy appearance rather than a crisp, bitter West Coast IPA.
Best for: experimenting with hazy IPA recipes without committing to a five-gallon batch. This is also an ingredient kit, so you'll need compatible equipment.
Look for recipes with late hop additions or dry hopping. These help preserve the citrus, pine, and tropical-fruit aromas IPA fans enjoy.
2. Fermentation temperature control
A stable temperature appropriate for the yeast helps avoid unwanted flavors. A temperature-controlled fermentation setup can be a better upgrade than buying fancy brewing equipment.
3. Sanitation and packaging
Reliable sanitizer, careful bottling, and limiting oxygen exposure help keep your finished IPA tasting fresh and hoppy.
For an IPA lover stepping into homebrewing (or looking for a streamlined small-batch setup), the "best" kit depends on whether you want a true stovetop all-grain experience or an easier extract-based start that still packs massive hop flavor.
The top home beer brewing kits tailored for or including fantastic IPA options are structured below by experience level and style:
MoreBeer! – Deluxe Home Brewing Kit + An IPA Recipe Add-on (Best 5-Gallon Upgrade Choice)
The Vibe: Serious gear for when you know you're hooked.
Why it’s great for IPA fans: If you want to skip 1-gallon batches and jump straight into standard 5-gallon homebrewing, MoreBeer’s Deluxe Home Brewing Kit is widely recognized by reviewers like Wirecutter as the gold standard for starter equipment. While it doesn't ship locked into a single flavor, you can pair the hardware kit with any of their legendary 5-gallon IPA recipe kits (like a Plina-style Double IPA or a hazy New England IPA). It gives you a heavy-duty bottling or kegging setup that will grow with you for years.[](https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-beer-brewing-kit/)
To help narrow down the ideal choice, tell me:
Do you want to start small with a 1-gallon stovetop kit or jump into a larger 5-gallon batch setup?
Are you looking for a West Coast style IPA (bitter and piney) or a Hazy/Juicy NEIPA (fruity and opaque)?
For a first-time homebrewer looking for a high-quality, comprehensive, and well-reviewed setup, three top-tier options stand out depending on the scale and style you want to start with:
MoreBeer! Deluxe Home Brewing Kit
The Vibe: Widely praised by experts (including top marks from The New York Times Wirecutter ) as the gold standard for beginners wanting to dive right into standard 5-gallon batches.
What's Included: A 5-gallon stainless steel brew kettle, a 6-gallon ported Fermonster plastic carboy (easier to clean and monitor than glass), a hydrometer for measuring alcohol content, professional-grade Star San sanitizer, tubing, a bottling setup, and your choice of an initial extract recipe kit.
The Vibe: The quintessential beginner kit that has launched hundreds of thousands of hobbyists.
What's Included: Signature siphonless fermentation bucket (which makes transferring and cleaning significantly less messy), bottling gear, an accurate thermometer, tubing, cleanser, and a recipe kit (usually an amber ale or hefeweizen).
Why it's great: Northern Brewer streamlines the intimidating parts of the process, and their printed and video instructions are exceptionally clear for a first-timer. (Note: You will need to supply your own large 5-gallon boiling pot or buy their version that includes one). [](https://www.reddit.com/r/Homebrewing/comments/16o27kj/best_beginner_kit/)
Mr. Beer Complete Beer Making Kit
The Vibe: The best choice if you want a low-commitment, smaller-footprint, ultra-budget entry point.
What's Included: A compact 2-gallon reusable fermentation keg, bottle/canning equipment, and standardized ingredient refills.
🏆 Best overall: Northern Brewer Brew Share Enjoy — $149.99
Northern Brewer currently lists the kit at $149.99 with 1,224 reviews; 83% are 5-star reviews. www.northernbrewer.com Independent testing has also ranked it the best overall home-brewing kit, specifically because it's unusually complete and includes the kettle that many starter kits leave out.
What's in the box:
5-gallon stainless-steel brew kettle
6.5-gallon fermenter with airlock
Bottling bucket and spigot
Hydrometer + test jar
Lab thermometer
Bottle filler, tubing and bottle brush
Bottle capper + caps
Cleaner/sanitizer
21-inch stainless spoon
One complete 5-gallon beer recipe, including grain/malt, hops and yeast
Printed step-by-step instructions
Homebrewing 101 course
That's enough for roughly 50 12-oz bottles of beer.
One caveat: bottles themselves aren't included, so you'll need about 50 reusable beer bottles (or you can eventually move to a kegging setup).
Why I'd choose it over cheaper kits
There's an Essential Brew Share Enjoy version for about $99.99, and it's highly rated, but it omits the brew kettle. shop.app If you're genuinely starting from zero, I think spending the extra ~$50 is worthwhile because you won't immediately discover that you need a large kettle.
I also wouldn't start with an expensive all-in-one electric grain system. Those are excellent once you're committed to brewing, but they add hundreds of dollars and introduce all-grain brewing complexity before you've learned the basics.
Bottom line: For ~$150, the Northern Brewer kit is the sweet spot: 5 gallons, real equipment, ingredients included, testing equipment included, and very little you'll need to buy separately.
If you tell me your budget and whether you want to make 1 gallon or 5 gallons, I can also compare the 3 best kits currently available and tell you exactly which one I'd buy.
Absolutely. I looked specifically for beginner-friendly, genuinely all-in-one kits with strong customer feedback, rather than just the cheapest starter box.
🏆 My top pick: Craft A Brew 1-Gallon Beer Making Kit
This is the better choice if you're already pretty sure you'll enjoy brewing. It has 1,224 customer reviews, with 83% at 5 stars, and users specifically praise the clear instructions and beginner accessibility.
The tradeoff is that 5 gallons is a lot of beer for your first experiment.
🥉 Another excellent small-batch option: Northern Brewer 1-Gallon Kit
This one has 187 reviews, with 84% 5-star and 11% 4-star ratings. A recent 2026 reviewer specifically described it as having everything needed to get started without being unnecessarily complicated.

Customer feedback
My recommendation: start with the Craft A Brew 1-gallon kit. It's inexpensive enough to experiment with, genuinely beginner-oriented, and gives you reusable equipment rather than a one-and-done novelty kit.
One caveat: check whether the particular package includes bottles before ordering. Bottling is the one area where "all-in-one" kits can differ, and some versions require you to supply bottles yourself.
If you'd like, I can also find the best kit under $50, the easiest possible kit, or a 5-gallon kit with the best value.
For a beginner jumping into homebrewing, an all-in-one starter kit takes the guesswork out of gathering equipment. Depending on whether you want a traditional stovetop kit (low cost, small footprint) or a fully self-contained electric system, highly reviewed options are available to fit your goals.
Top Beginner Homebrewing Kits
Northern Brewer "Brew Share Enjoy" Starter Kit
Type: 5-gallon standard equipment kit (extract-based with specialty grains)
Why it's great: Widely considered a gold standard for beginners on sites like Beer Maverick . It includes a 6.5-gallon fermenter with lid, bottling bucket, auto-siphon, a stainless steel brew kettle, bottle filler, sanitizer, and a complete recipe kit (like Hank’s Hefeweizen). It yields about 5 gallons (roughly 48 bottles) per batch, giving you the classic homebrewing experience.
Brooklyn Brew Shop Everyday IPA (or Beer Making Kit)
Would you prefer a smaller 1-gallon starter kit (which takes up less space and uses regular kitchen pots) or are you happy going straight for the 5-gallon standard setup?
My pick for a first-ever batch is the Northern Brewer Brew. Share. Enjoy. Starter Set with the 5-gallon recipe. Multiple current 2026 comparisons put it at or near the top for beginners, with ratings around 4.6–4.7/5.
Why I'd choose it
Full 5-gallon batch — roughly 50 × 12-oz bottles.
Actually close to all-inclusive: fermenter, bottling equipment, hydrometer, thermometer, capper, and a brew kettle are included.

Someone committed to brewing
Type: 1-gallon stovetop all-grain kit
Why it's great: Highly recommended on community forums like Reddit r/Homebrewing for small spaces (like apartments). Instead of malt extract, these compact kits use real mashed grains on your standard kitchen stove to yield a manageable 1-gallon batch (9–10 bottles). It lowers the financial and physical commitment while teaching you the real mechanics of brewing.[](https://www.reddit.com/r/Homebrewing/comments/16o27kj/best_beginner_kit/)
Craft A Brew Starter Kit
Type: 1-gallon equipment and recipe kit
Why it's great: Similar in scope to Brooklyn Brew Shop, Craft A Brew focuses on simplicity, clear step-by-step instructions, and high-quality reusable glass fermenters. It’s an approachable, budget-friendly entry point if you want to test the waters before investing in heavy gear.[](https://www.reddit.com/r/Homebrewing/comments/16o27kj/best_beginner_kit/)
If you'd like to narrow this down, let me know:
Do you want to brew 5 gallons (larger batches, more equipment) or 1 gallon (stovetop, compact)?
Do you have a preference for extract brewing (faster/easier) versus all-grain brewing (traditional ingredients)?
I can help you pick the exact fit or draft a checklist of what else you might need!
Includes a beginner-friendly extract recipe, so you don't have to figure out ingredients separately.
The siphonless fermenter/spigot setup makes transferring and bottling easier for a novice.
You'll have equipment you can continue using after your first batch rather than immediately outgrowing a tiny starter kit.
One important catch: you'll still need beer bottles (and, depending on the exact package, brewing sanitizer/consumables can be worth double-checking before ordering). Current reviews consistently flag bottles as the main omission.
If you want the easiest possible first experience
A Mr. Beer 2-gallon kit is simpler and requires less equipment, but you'll make considerably less beer. Current comparisons describe it as the lowest-friction option for absolute beginners.
Bottom line: For a serious first batch, I'd spend a little more and get the Northern Brewer 5-gallon kit. It's the better balance of completeness, beginner-friendliness, and equipment you'll keep using.
