Smart thermostats

The best smart thermostat for most homes is one that balances energy savings, reliable temperature control, easy app controls, and compatibility with your heating and cooling system. But there isn't one winner for everyone: the best choice for a heat pump can differ from the best for a conventional furnace or a home with remote room sensors.

Here are the main things I'd prioritize: compatibility with your HVAC system, comfort across different rooms, useful automation, and whether the thermostat can genuinely help lower your energy bills.

Before you buy

One important caution: check HVAC compatibility first. Heat pumps, multi-stage systems, electric baseboard heaters, and some older installations need specific thermostat support. Wiring, including whether you have a C-wire, also matters.

My recommendation: start with the ecobee Premium if you want the most versatile feature set, or the Nest Learning Thermostat if you want it to learn your routine automatically.

One question so I can narrow it down: What type of heating and cooling do you have?

[Find my best thermostat]

The smart thermostat features most likely to reduce your monthly utility bills are automatic scheduling, occupancy detection, energy-use reports, and smart temperature adjustments. These features reduce unnecessary heating and air conditioning, which account for a substantial share of household energy costs.www.energystar.gov+5

The 7 features worth looking for

•

1. Automatic scheduling and learning

The thermostat learns your routine or follows a schedule, lowering heating or reducing cooling while you're asleep or away, then restoring comfortable temperatures when needed.

High priority

---

•

2. Geofencing and occupancy detection

Uses your phone's location or compatible sensors to recognize when the home is empty and adjust the temperature automatically. This helps prevent heating or cooling an empty house unnecessarily.

---

•

3. Energy-use reports and insights

Shows HVAC runtime, energy-use trends, and sometimes estimated costs. You can identify when your system runs excessively and adjust your schedule or temperature settings accordingly.

---

•

4. Remote control from your phone

Lets you correct settings if you forget to adjust the thermostat before leaving, or change them while traveling. This is especially useful for unexpected schedule changes and vacations.

---

•

5. Room temperature and occupancy sensors

Compatible sensors help address temperature differences between rooms and can prioritize occupied spaces. This is especially useful if some rooms get too hot or cold while others are comfortable.

---

•

6. Adaptive energy-saving settings

Features such as eco mode, weather-aware adjustments, and optimized heating or cooling schedules can reduce unnecessary system runtime without requiring constant manual changes.

---

•

7. Utility rebates and demand-response support

Some thermostats qualify for purchase rebates or utility programs that reward you for temporarily reducing energy use during peak demand. Check the terms, since participation may allow the utility to make limited temperature adjustments.

Feature guidance: ENERGY STAR and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).www.energystar.gov+3

Which features save the most money?

If you want to prioritize features rather than pay extra for every smart-home capability, use this comparison.

ENERGY STAR reports average savings of approximately 8% on heating and cooling bills, or around $50 per year, for certified smart thermostats. Actual savings vary with climate, existing equipment, home occupancy, and temperature habits.www.energystar.gov+1

My recommendation

Choose an ENERGY STAR-certified model with automatic scheduling, occupancy or geofencing, and monthly energy reports. Check heating-system compatibility before buying, particularly if you have a heat pump or a system that requires a C-wire. You can also check available rebates using the official ENERGY STAR Rebate Finder.www.energystar.gov+2

The key point: a thermostat saves money when it actually reduces unnecessary heating and cooling. Extra features are most valuable when they make those energy-saving adjustments happen automatically and consistently.

Best smart thermostats for saving energy in 2026

My top recommendation is the Google Nest Learning Thermostat (4th Gen) for automatic energy savings, with the ecobee Smart Thermostat Enhanced as a strong alternative for households that want room-occupancy detection and more control over comfort. The best choice depends on your HVAC system, budget, and how much you want the thermostat to automate.

ENERGY STAR says certified smart thermostats save an average of about 8% on heating and cooling bills, or roughly $50 per year. Actual savings vary with your climate, equipment, schedule, and temperature settings.www.energystar.gov+1

Which thermostat will save you the most?

Three things to check before buying

• ENERGY STAR certification: Look for a certified model with independently verified real-world energy savings. Browse ENERGY STAR thermostats.www.energystar.gov+1
• HVAC compatibility: Check whether you have a heat pump, conventional furnace and AC, or electric baseboard heating. Not every smart thermostat supports every system.
• C-wire requirements: Some models need a common wire for continuous power; others can work without one or include an adapter.www.consumerreports.org+3

One important money-saving tip: use automatic schedules or away detection and let the temperature move a little farther from your preferred setting while you're asleep or out. That can matter more than paying extra for a fancy display.
