How I'd choose

One important caveat: vendor comparisons can produce very different results depending on the rules, attack corpus, and configuration. For example, the 2026 Check Point comparison reported very low false positives for Cloudflare in its specific test, but also a lower attack-detection rate than some competitors. The DX test I'd run before buying

Test each finalist against real application traffic in a staging environment:

• Shadow or log-only evaluation: See what would be blocked before enforcing rules, where supported.
• Developer workflows: Ensure local development, preview deployments, webhooks, CI/CD, and API clients continue to work.
• False-positive debugging: Can an engineer identify the exact rule and add a narrow exception in minutes?
• DDoS resilience: Test rate limiting and application-layer attack mitigation without disrupting legitimate traffic.
• Automation: Manage rules through version control and infrastructure as code.
• Origin protection: Prevent attackers from bypassing the WAF and reaching your origin directly.

My default recommendation is Cloudflare first, with Fastly as a serious alternative for developer-led API platforms. Keep the WAF in a measured rollout rather than switching every rule to blocking mode on day one.
