For a kid who needs a laptop for schoolwork but also wants to play games, I’d focus on last-generation gaming laptops with 16GB of RAM, a 512GB SSD, and an NVIDIA RTX 4050 graphics card. They’re powerful enough for homework, video calls, creative projects, and many modern games without paying for the newest hardware.
My advice is to target $600–$800 if possible, and only spend more if gaming performance is a real priority. Older models can be excellent bargains, but some retailers keep their prices surprisingly high even after newer models arrive.

Look for the Ryzen 7 7445HS or a comparable processor, 16GB RAM and a 512GB SSD. It's a good all-rounder for school and gaming. A Walmart listing showed a configuration at about $692, but it was out of stock when checked.
