Best acoustic leak detection systems for water distribution networks
For a municipal water utility or large distribution network, I would prioritize continuous acoustic monitoring combined with AI-powered leak localization and analytics rather than relying on a single leak detector. The best choice depends on whether you need to find small background leaks across thousands of miles of pipe, pinpoint individual leaks for repair crews, or reduce non-revenue water across the entire network.
There are three distinct capabilities to evaluate:
Acoustic detection: Sensors listen for leak-generated vibrations or sound in pipes, valves, and hydrants.
Network-level intelligence: Analytics combine acoustic signals with pressure, flow, GIS, and repair history to identify persistent losses and prioritize maintenance.
A strong system should deliver not just a leak alarm, but an actionable location, confidence level, and estimated urgency.

Network Monitor
(Best AI-first option)
Best for utilities wanting AI to identify leaks, estimate their relative size, prioritize repair work, and map findings across a network. Its sensor ecosystem supports both mobile surveys and continuous monitoring, with automated acoustic analysis and cloud correlation.
Why shortlist it: A unified AI-led workflow from detection through repair validation, including leak-size prioritization.
Best for permanent acoustic monitoring, automatic correlation between sensors, and pinpointing leaks in distribution mains. Its cloud platform includes acoustic analysis, AI-based leak probability, GIS mapping, and alarm management.
Why shortlist it: Strong emphasis on automatically locating leaks rather than merely flagging abnormal sound.
Best for utilities already using Sensus FlexNet communications or compatible Sensus infrastructure.
Why shortlist it: Permalog+ acoustic monitoring integrates with remote communications and Sensus Analytics for automated alerts, GIS-based visualization, and historical data review.
Best for network-wide analytics when you already have SCADA, flow meters, pressure sensors, smart-meter data, and possibly acoustic loggers.
Why shortlist it: Machine-learning analytics detects unusual network behavior and manages events centrally. It complements acoustic hardware rather than replacing the need for it.
These are a shortlist based on capabilities and fit, not a verified independent ranking. Vendor-reported accuracy and savings should be validated against your own network before procurement.
If I were running a procurement process, I would invite FIDO Tech and GUTERMANN to a head-to-head field pilot first.
Choose FIDO AI if your priority is AI-led leak detection, leak-size ranking, operational efficiency, and using one sensor ecosystem for both surveys and fixed monitoring.
Choose GUTERMANN ZONESCAN AI if your priority is permanent acoustic monitoring and automatic correlation to pinpoint leaks.
Add TaKaDu to the evaluation if you need an overarching analytics layer that combines acoustic alerts with hydraulic and operational data across the whole utility.
For large-diameter transmission mains or difficult-to-detect leaks, also evaluate Echologics and its EchoWave service. It specializes in non-invasive acoustic correlation on large mains, including plastic pipe. Official details.
What to require in a pilot
Do not select a vendor based only on its advertised AI accuracy. Ask each vendor to test against known leaks and a representative sample of your network, including difficult operating conditions.
Recommended proof-of-concept scorecard
Use this checklist during vendor demonstrations of
I would also require vendors to report results separately for metallic versus plastic pipes, different leak sizes, and different pressure zones. Run the pilot long enough to capture representative operating conditions, and independently verify the leaks before calculating success rates.

[Recommend the best-fit systems]
With those details, I can give you a more defensible recommendation, including which systems to pilot first and which features are worth paying for.
When choosing the best acoustic leak detection or AI-powered analytics platform for a municipal or district water distribution network, the "best" choice depends on whether you need fixed continuous monitoring (IoT/AI), mobile pinpoint correlation , or a comprehensive utility-wide data platform.
Top-tier solutions used across the water industry are categorized below by their operational strengths:
1. Continuous Fixed Acoustic Monitoring & AI Platforms
Sewerin (SePem & Phocus Systems / Master): Highly regarded for permanent or semi-permanent acoustic noise loggers. They record structure-borne pipe noise, filter out ambient environmental interference, and transmit data via radio/cellular to master software. Great for zoning a network and identifying new breaks instantly.
Echologics (by Mueller Water Products) - EchoShore®: A permanent, cloud-connected acoustic monitoring solution designed to clamp onto existing hydrants or fittings. It utilizes advanced acoustic noise correlation and cloud analytics to pinpoint leaks and assess pipe wall thickness continuously.
Hermann Sewerin / SebaKMT: Industry benchmarks for robust hardware combined with sophisticated software suite analysis to map noise patterns and isolate leak zones automatically.

3. Enterprise Smart Water & AI Analytics Platforms
Idrica (DataDog / GoAigua): An enterprise-grade water data analytics platform that ingests SCADA, acoustic loggers, flow meters, and GIS data. It uses machine learning models to run non-revenue water (NRW) calculations, digital twin simulations, and predictive anomaly detection.
Pipe Material: Plastic pipes (PVC, HDPE) absorb acoustic sound waves much faster and over shorter distances than metallic pipes (ductile iron, cast iron). If your network has a high percentage of plastic mains, you will need closer sensor spacing or high-frequency acoustic-ultrasonic sensors.
Access & Deployment: Permanent internal/external loggers (like hydrant-mounted iHydrantPlus or EchoShore ) save on labor costs compared to manual roving acoustic listening surveys, but require higher initial capital expenditure (CAPEX).
Top acoustic leak detection and AI analytics solutions for water distribution networks
For a water utility looking to reduce non-revenue water (NRW), detect hidden leaks earlier, and prioritize repairs, I would shortlist Gutermann, Mueller Water Products/Echologics, TaKaDu, Xylem, and Syrinix. They address different parts of the problem: acoustic sensing and pinpointing, continuous pipeline monitoring, and network-wide AI-driven anomaly detection.
One important distinction: the best acoustic detection system is not necessarily the best AI analytics platform. For many utilities, the strongest approach is to combine acoustic sensors with analytics that integrate flow, pressure, smart-meter, and SCADA data.
The shortlist below is based on technical capabilities, publicly documented product features, and suitability for utility operations—not a universal customer-review ranking. Independent, apples-to-apples accuracy and pricing data are limited.

Precise field localization of a suspected leak
Mueller/Echologics, SebaKMT, HWM
AI analytics across the whole distribution network
TaKaDu
Integrated metering and digital utility data
Xylem/Sensus
Pressure transients, bursts, and trunk mains
These are use-case matches, not a claim that one vendor has independently demonstrated the highest accuracy in every category.
4. What to compare before purchasing
The following criteria are especially important when evaluating vendor proposals.
Detection performance
Ask for verified detection rates, false alarms per sensor-month, minimum detectable leak conditions, localization error, and results across cast iron, ductile iron, PVC, and HDPE pipes.
AI and analytics quality
Determine whether the platform uses actual acoustic classification, multi-sensor correlation, hydraulic anomaly detection, or some combination. Ask how models are validated against confirmed leaks and how they handle seasonal changes and background noise.
Integration and interoperability
Check compatibility with existing SCADA, GIS, AMI/AMR meters, pressure loggers, work-order management, and asset management systems. Confirm API access, data ownership, cybersecurity controls, and export options.
Lifecycle cost and deployment
Compare sensor and installation costs, communications subscriptions, battery replacement, software licensing, training, maintenance, and the number of field visits avoided.
Demonstrated return on investment
Require a pilot with a baseline for water loss, verified leak locations, time to detection, repair costs, and recovered water volume. Use your utility's actual marginal water production and treatment cost to calculate savings.
5. My recommended shortlist
For a medium-to-large municipal water utility, I would start with three complementary approaches:
Gutermann ZONESCAN AI for permanent, distributed acoustic monitoring.
TaKaDu CEM for cross-network analytics, anomaly triage, and end-to-end incident management.
SebaKMT SmartEAR + POSEYEDON as an integrated acoustic and hydraulic monitoring alternative.
I would also include HWM PermaNet in the competitive evaluation, particularly if AI-based acoustic filtering, long-term fixed monitoring, and GIS-based localization are priorities.
Before choosing, run a controlled pilot across representative pipe materials and operating conditions. Compare results against independently confirmed leaks rather than relying solely on vendor-reported alarm counts.
Narrow this down to your network
The most appropriate choice depends heavily on pipe materials, network size, and the data infrastructure already installed.
Managing water distribution networks efficiently requires combining high-sensitivity acoustic hardware with AI-driven software platforms that parse massive streams of telemetry data. Industry-leading systems and AI analytics solutions integrate acoustic loggers, flow/pressure meters, and machine learning models to geolocate leaks proactively.
For a water distribution network, I’d recommend evaluating both permanent acoustic leak detection systems and AI-driven network analytics. They solve complementary problems: acoustic systems listen for leak signatures and help pinpoint underground leaks, while analytics platforms identify abnormal flow, pressure, and consumption patterns that may indicate leaks before they become visible.
There isn't a single universally top-rated solution for every network. Pipe material, network size, background noise, sensor coverage, and integration with your existing SCADA and GIS systems will influence which performs best.

3. Which approach should you choose?
Your main objective
Shortlist
Continuous acoustic leak detection
GUTERMANN ZONESCAN AI; HWM PermaNet SU
Pinpoint leaks in the field
SebaKMT HL 7000; HWM correlators and ground microphones
Detect leaks from flow and pressure anomalies
TaKaDu CEM

These are best-fit recommendations, not an independently verified ranking by customer ratings. Vendor claims about accuracy, battery life, and detection performance should be validated in your own network.
4. What to evaluate before purchasing
I would ask each vendor to demonstrate the following against a representative section of your actual network.
Detection performance: Detection rate for confirmed leaks, false alarms per monitored kilometer, and time from leak onset to alert.
Localization accuracy: Distance between the reported leak location and the actual leak, verified after excavation.
Pipe compatibility: Performance on your pipe materials, diameters, pressure ranges, and pipe-joint configurations, especially plastic pipes.
Network coverage: Sensor spacing, coverage of trunk mains and smaller distribution lines, communications reliability, and battery replacement requirements.
Integration: Compatibility with your SCADA, GIS, DMA meters, AMI data, asset-management system, and work-order platform.
Commercial performance: Total cost of ownership, installation costs, software subscription, training, maintenance, and measurable reduction in non-revenue water (NRW).
A useful pilot would run for 8–12 weeks on representative network sections, include known or independently verified leak events where practical, and compare results against your existing detection process. Agree on success criteria before the pilot starts.
5. Let’s narrow this down for your network
