If you mean an over-the-counter calming treat/supplement, I’d look first for one containing L-theanine, ideally from a reputable veterinary-focused brand. Veterinary sources identify L-theanine and alpha-casozepine as two of the better-supported supplement ingredients for canine anxiety.
My top picks
L-theanine treats/chews — best starting point
L-theanine has some evidence for reducing anxiety and is generally used for mild-to-moderate stress.
Veterinary products such as Anxitane and Composure are specifically formulated around this ingredient.
One study found daily L-theanine reduced owner-reported anxiety behaviors during thunderstorms, although the study was small and had limitations.
There is no single "best" calming treat because every dog's chemistry and anxiety triggers are different. However, top-rated, vet-recommended calming soft chews generally rely on clinically backed, natural ingredients to take the edge off stress (like thunderstorms, car rides, or separation) without heavy sedation.[1][2]
Popular and highly effective options include:
Formulated with Suntheanine (an advanced form of L-theanine) and Ashwagandha to help reduce hyperactivity and nervous tension.
Combines hemp seed oil, melatonin, chamomile, and ginger root (great for dogs who also get an upset stomach from anxiety).
A high-strength, vet-developed option using melatonin, valerian root, and L-tryptophan to target calming brain pathways.
Key Ingredients to Look For:

Alpha-casozepine — good alternative
Derived from milk protein, it appears to have a calming effect through the GABA system without necessarily causing sedation.
Zylkene is a veterinary supplement based on alpha-casozepine.
Combination calming chews
Products combining L-theanine with ingredients such as L-tryptophan can be reasonable for dogs with mild situational anxiety.
What I wouldn't prioritize: products marketed mainly around vague "herbal calming blends" or CBD. Evidence and product quality are much less consistent, and supplements aren't held to the same testing standards as medications.
If your dog's anxiety is severe—panic during storms, destructive behavior when alone, aggression, nonstop panting/pacing, etc.—calming treats alone may not be enough. Veterinary behavior treatment can include behavior modification plus prescription medication when appropriate.
If you tell me your dog's weight, age, and what triggers the anxiety (thunderstorms, fireworks, separation, car rides, vet visits, general anxiety), I can narrow this down to the best specific calming treat and dosing approach.
Dealing with a pup's separation anxiety is so tough—heartbreaking for you and stressful for them. Calming treats and chews can be a helpful tool to take the edge off mild stress, especially when paired with desensitization training.[](https://www.puremajestypet.com/blogs/news/best-calming-treats-for-dogs)
Popular, vet-backed, and owner-trusted calming treats and supplements feature distinct active ingredients:
Zesty Paws Hemp Elements Calming OraStix
Active Ingredients: Suntheanine (a clinically studied L-Theanine), melatonin, chamomile, and hemp seed.
Why it works: The act of chewing itself is naturally soothing for dogs, and these peppermint-flavored sticks double as dental chews while helping them relax when you step out.
NaturVet Quiet Moments Calming Aid Soft Chews
Active Ingredients: Thiamine, L-Tryptophan, ginger (great for nervous tummies), and melatonin.
Why it works: Highly palatable and budget-friendly, these are designed to ease nervous tension and promote rest without heavy sedation.
Native Pet Air-Dried Calm Chews
Active Ingredients: Hemp seed powder, bovine colostrum (hydrolyzed casein), L-theanine, and melatonin.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements Calming Care
Active Ingredients: Proprietary probiotic strain BL999.
Why it works: It's a powder rather than a treat, mixed into food once a day. It’s heavily recommended by vets to help dogs maintain calm behavior and cope with everyday external stressors like separation over the long term.
A Quick Tip on Expectations
Over-the-counter calming supplements typically offer a modest, "taking the edge off" effect rather than an instant fix for deep separation anxiety. They work best as a comforting layer underneath a gradual alone-time training plan.[](https://www.puremajestypet.com/blogs/news/best-calming-treats-for-dogs)
To help narrow down the best option, tell me:
How old is your pup?
What specific behaviors do they show when left alone (pacing, whining, destructive chewing)?
Have they tried any supplements or crate strategies yet?
Yes — calming chews can be worth trying, particularly for mild-to-moderate anxiety, but separation anxiety usually responds best when a supplement is combined with gradual-departure training and enrichment.
Options I'd look at
VetriScience Calm & Confident (formerly Composure) — a chew containing L-theanine, thiamine, L-tryptophan and a colostrum calming complex. The manufacturer says it typically begins working within about 30 minutes.
Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Supplements Calming Care — not technically a treat/chew, but a daily probiotic powder containing Bifidobacterium longum BL999. Purina specifically lists separation among the stressors it is intended to help with, but says it can take up to six weeks for full effect.
Vets also commonly discuss L-theanine, L-tryptophan and alpha-casozepine as ingredients that may provide calming support. The evidence is still limited compared with prescription anxiety treatment, and supplements aren't regulated as strictly as medications.
One important distinction
If your pup is panicking when you leave—barking/howling continuously, destroying doors or windows, trying to escape, urinating/defecating despite being house-trained, or unable to eat a favorite treat—a calming chew alone may not be enough. For true separation anxiety, gradual departures and behavior modification are central to treatment.
If you tell me your dog's age, weight, breed, and what they do when left alone, I can narrow this down to 2–3 appropriate options and tell you which ingredients I'd prioritize.
