Best water management and dewatering software for mine sites
My recommendation is to shortlist GoldSim, Itasca MINEDW, Metso Pretium Water Advisor, and SitePro. The best option depends on whether you want to track total mine-site water consumption, forecast water balances, engineer groundwater dewatering, or control pumps and water infrastructure in real time.
These are different software categories, so choosing the right one matters more than choosing the most feature-rich package.
I need to manage our water rights and resources. What is the best water resource management software?

[Find my best-fit software]
I can then narrow the options to the strongest two or three and help you compare their functionality, deployment model, integrations, and pricing availability.
Choosing the best software for mine-site water management and dewatering depends heavily on whether you are doing site-wide water balance modeling, subsurface hydrogeological/dewatering design , or real-time operational monitoring.
The industry standard software tools are categorized below by their primary strengths:
GoldSim — Best for Site-Wide Water Balance & System Modeling

Leading software for water and dewatering management in mining
As of October 2026, the strongest software options for mining water management fall into three main categories: mine-wide water balance and forecasting, groundwater modeling and dewatering design, and real-time operational water management. No single platform is best at all three.
For a mining operation evaluating software, I would start with GoldSim, Itasca MINEDW, DHI MIKE Mine/FEFLOW, Metso Pretium Water Advisor, and Seequent's hydrogeological modeling tools. Each addresses a different part of the water-management problem.

2. Detailed review of the leading platforms
1. GoldSim
(Best for strategic planning)
GoldSim supports integrated mine water balance, water quality, storage, recycling, contaminant transport, and uncertainty analysis. It can model water flows across mining, processing, tailings, and closure scenarios.

Website:
3. DHI MIKE Mine and FEFLOW
DHI's MIKE Mine is a model-based digital-twin platform intended to make measured and modeled mine-water data accessible for operational decisions. FEFLOW provides detailed groundwater-flow and transport modeling capabilities. Together, the portfolio addresses both water-management coordination and technical hydrogeology.
Consider it when: you want to connect site water data, groundwater models, and operational planning across the mine lifecycle.
This solution combines live water measurements, water-quality data, process information, and predictive water-balance calculations. Its dashboards and scenario tools help operators assess the effects of production changes, water treatment investments, and site expansions.

4. What about actual pump and dewatering-system control?
One important distinction: modeling dewatering is not the same as operating a dewatering system.
If your goal is to monitor sump levels, pump availability, flow rates, discharge pressures, pipeline conditions, and alarms—or automatically control pumps—you should also evaluate the mine's SCADA, PLC, instrumentation, and pump-management layer. The modeling products above do not all provide these capabilities natively.
A practical architecture may combine:
Engineering model: predicts groundwater inflows and required pumping capacity.
Operational water platform: tracks water volumes, quality, reuse, and site-wide balance.
Control system: operates pumps, valves, and level controls and raises alarms.
Environmental reporting: tracks discharge compliance, monitoring results, and water-quality trends.
This layered approach avoids buying a sophisticated groundwater model when the actual problem is pump uptime, or buying an operational dashboard when the real issue is predicting groundwater inflows.
5. My recommendation
I would narrow the initial evaluation to three candidates based on the main objective:
For an operating mine seeking better overall water management: compare Metso Pretium Water Advisor and DHI MIKE Mine.
For an open-pit or underground mine with serious groundwater inflow challenges: start with Itasca MINEDW and compare it with FEFLOW.
For strategic water balance, scenario planning, and long-term risk: start with GoldSim.
For a larger operation, a combination may be more effective than a single product.
To refine the shortlist
What type of mining operation are you targeting, and what is the main job the software needs to perform?

The leading software solutions utilized across the industry for these tasks are organized below by their primary function:
MINEDW (by Itasca International)

Leading software platforms for mine water management and dewatering
As of October 2026, the strongest options depend on whether you need to model groundwater inflows and design dewatering systems, manage a mine-wide water balance, or monitor and automate water operations in real time. These are different software categories, and most mining operations will need a combination rather than a single platform.
The most relevant shortlist includes GoldSim, Itasca's MINEDW, DHI's FEFLOW and MIKE Mine, SitePro, and Groundwater Modeling System (GMS).
1. Leading platforms at a glance
Platform

FEFLOW
3D groundwater flow and transport simulation
Complex hydrogeology and drawdown prediction
MIKE Mine
Integrated mine water management and modeling

Website:
3. Which platforms should you shortlist?
The following recommendations are based on functional fit, rather than a claim that one vendor dominates the entire market.
If your priority is dewatering design
Start with MINEDW and FEFLOW. Evaluate their suitability for your geology, mine geometry, groundwater monitoring data and geotechnical workflows.
If your priority is site-wide water planning
Start with GoldSim for water-balance forecasting, scenario analysis, uncertainty and closure planning.
If your priority is daily operations
Evaluate MIKE Mine for integrated water information and model-based decision support, and SitePro for pump monitoring and automation.
If you need an integrated solution
A practical architecture is MINEDW or FEFLOW for groundwater predictions, GoldSim for the mine-wide water balance, and MIKE Mine or SitePro for operational data and control. Confirm integration capabilities with each vendor before selecting the stack.
4. What to evaluate before purchasing
For a mining operation, I would assess these capabilities in vendor demonstrations:
Water balance: Integration of groundwater inflows, rainfall, runoff, evaporation, tailings, process water and storage.
Dewatering engineering: Predicted inflows, well design, pump sizing, drawdown and pore-pressure impacts.
Operational visibility: Integration with SCADA, telemetry, meters, sensors and existing historian systems.
Forecasting and alerts: Pump failure, rising pit levels, extreme rainfall, insufficient pumping capacity and discharge exceedances.
Compliance: Water quality, discharge limits, sampling, audit trails and regulatory reporting.
Deployment and cost: Cloud versus on-premises, licensing, integration effort, training and ongoing model maintenance.
Not every platform provides all these functions natively. In particular, a groundwater simulation model should not be assumed to provide live pump control, and an automation platform should not be assumed to replace a calibrated hydrogeological model.
My recommendation
For an initial shortlist, I would prioritize MINEDW, GoldSim and MIKE Mine, then add SitePro if automated field operations are a major requirement. Add FEFLOW where complex hydrogeology warrants a more general-purpose groundwater modeling environment.
One question would help narrow this down: Are you primarily looking for software to manage water at an operating mine in real time, or to design and optimize the dewatering system through engineering models?
