BigID holds a wide lead across data discovery and compliance questions, regularly recommended for scanning heterogeneous enterprise environments and mapping sensitive records to individuals. While BigID remains the standard suggestion across all core prompts, Varonis is frequently brought up alongside it when buyers focus specifically on unstructured file shares, email systems, and access permissions.
Since July, BigIDrising has expanded its presence across the market, while recommendations for Concentric AIfalling, IBM Securityfalling, and Amazon Maciefalling have dropped off noticeably. Forcepoint has dropped out of answers for tracking down scattered sensitive data.

If you need to automatically discover, scan, and categorize sensitive personal data across all your systems for regulatory compliance, you're looking for a combination of Sensitive Data Discovery, Data Classification, and Data Security Posture Management (DSPM).
These tools help organizations locate personally identifiable information (PII), protected health information (PHI), payment data, and other regulated information across cloud storage, databases, SaaS applications, endpoints, and sometimes on-premises infrastructure.
The key is to find a platform that does more than scan files: it should classify data, map where it resides and who can access it, identify compliance risks, and produce evidence for audits.
Shortlist: tools worth evaluating
1. BigID
(Broad enterprise discovery)
Best for organizations with a mix of cloud, SaaS, on-premises, structured, and unstructured data. Supports sensitive-data classification, privacy workflows, and data risk analysis.
Provides sensitive information detection, trainable classifiers, sensitivity labels, and information protection. A natural starting point if you already use Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, and Azure.
Evaluate for: Microsoft 365 compliance, information protection, DLP, and audit workflows.
Strong option when your priority is finding sensitive data in files, email, databases, and collaboration platforms while understanding who can access it. Also supports exposure remediation and suspicious-activity monitoring.
Evaluate for: excessive permissions, exposed files, sensitive data on file shares, Microsoft environments.
A specialist DSPM option to investigate for discovering and classifying sensitive data across distributed cloud data environments and connecting findings to security risk.
Evaluate for: multi-cloud estates, data exposure analysis, and security-team workflows.
Worth evaluating if your systems are primarily in public cloud and you want sensitive-data findings correlated with cloud misconfigurations, identities, and attack paths.

These are candidates to shortlist, not a claim that any one tool covers every system or guarantees compliance. Actual coverage depends on connectors, licenses, deployment choices, and configuration.
How they compare
Requirement
Best starting candidates
Broad hybrid discovery and privacy workflows
BigID
Existing Microsoft 365 investment
Microsoft Purview
File-level visibility and access remediation
Varonis
Cloud-focused sensitive-data risk
Cyera or Wiz
Automated classification and ongoing monitoring
For context, DSPM is generally about discovering sensitive data and assessing its exposure, while data loss prevention (DLP) focuses more on preventing unauthorized sharing or movement. You may need both.
What to require for regulatory compliance
Regardless of vendor, I would evaluate each tool against these six capabilities:
Automated discovery: Connect to all relevant databases, file shares, cloud storage, SaaS apps, endpoints, backups, and data warehouses.
Accurate classification: Identify PII, PHI, payment card data, government identifiers, credentials, and custom-defined sensitive fields.
Continuous rescanning: Detect newly created, copied, or modified sensitive data.
Compliance mapping: Map findings to applicable requirements, such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, HIPAA, or PCI DSS.
Audit evidence: Export data inventories, scan histories, policy results, remediation records, and reports for auditors.
Risk remediation: Identify excessive access and exposed data, then support controlled actions such as labeling, restricting permissions, masking, or deletion.
Important: Automated discovery supports compliance, but does not establish compliance by itself. Verify that each vendor supports your specific regulations and required evidence.
My recommendation
Start with a proof of concept involving BigID, Microsoft Purview, and one specialist DSPM platform such as Cyera if your environment is heterogeneous. If you are primarily a Microsoft organization, assess Purview first to determine whether your existing licensing meets your needs.
Test each candidate against the same representative data set, measuring classification precision, missed sensitive records, source coverage, scan performance, and the quality of audit reports.
Let’s narrow this to your environment
The most important question is: What systems do you need to scan?
1. Your environment
Microsoft 365, Azure, and Windows
AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud
Hybrid: cloud, SaaS, and on-premises
Primarily databases and data warehouses
All systems, including endpoints and backups
2. Which regulations apply?
3. Your main goal
Find sensitive data and generate audit evidence
Find data and automatically reduce exposure
Build personal-data inventories and support privacy requests
Continuously monitor sensitive data across systems
Automating the discovery and classification of sensitive personal data is a core part of a modern data privacy and compliance program. The right tools can help you find personal information across databases, file shares, cloud storage, SaaS applications, endpoints, and data lakes; classify it by sensitivity; and produce evidence for regulatory requirements.
My recommendation is to evaluate data discovery and classification platforms (often called DSPM or data security posture management tools), enterprise data loss prevention (DLP), and dedicated privacy discovery tools. They overlap, but they solve different problems.
1. Tools worth evaluating
1. Microsoft Purview
(Best for Microsoft-centric environments)
Discovers and classifies sensitive information across Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Exchange, endpoints, and supported hybrid environments. Supports built-in and custom classifiers, sensitivity labels, and DLP policies.
Best when you already use Microsoft 365 and want classification tied directly to protection and compliance workflows.
Put it on your shortlist for discovering personal data across diverse data stores, building data inventories, identifying sensitive data categories, and supporting privacy workflows such as data subject requests and regulatory assessments.
Useful for finding PII, payment data, health data, credentials, and other sensitive content in files, databases, cloud repositories, and SaaS. It also connects classification with excessive permissions, risky sharing, and remediation.
Worth evaluating if data is spread across cloud infrastructure, SaaS, databases, and on-premises systems. Its platform emphasizes AI-based classification, identity and access context, data exposure, and remediation.
Provides inspection, discovery, classification, and de-identification capabilities for sensitive data such as PII in supported cloud data stores. A natural starting point for Google Cloud environments, though it is not a universal scanner for every enterprise repository.
Consider it if you need to combine sensitive-data discovery with cloud misconfiguration analysis, identity permissions, exposure prioritization, and security operations.
These are candidates to evaluate, not a definitive performance ranking. Actual coverage depends on connectors, licensing, deployment model, and the data repositories you need to scan.
2. Match the tool to the job
Your primary requirement
Start with
Discover personal data for privacy compliance
BigID, Microsoft Purview
Find sensitive files and risky permissions
Varonis
Map sensitive data risk across multiple clouds
Cyera, Cortex Cloud DSPM
Scan data held in Google Cloud
Google Cloud Sensitive Data Protection
Automatically label data and prevent leakage
DSPM focuses on where sensitive data lives and how exposed it is. DLP focuses more on preventing inappropriate access, sharing, transfer, or exfiltration. They complement each other.
3. What to look for when automating classification
Regardless of the vendor, validate these capabilities in a proof of concept.
Broad data coverage: Structured databases, file shares, object storage, SaaS, email, backups, and endpoints.
Configurable classifiers: Detect names, addresses, government identifiers, payment card data, health information, biometrics, and custom business-specific data types.
Context-aware classification: Distinguish a real identifier from a coincidental number or a test record to reduce false positives.
Repeatable scans: Scheduled or incremental rescanning when data changes, plus coverage reporting for repositories that could not be scanned.
Automation and integrations: APIs, webhooks, SIEM integration, ticketing workflows, and exportable findings.
Audit evidence: Timestamped scan records, classification rules and versions, scan coverage, exceptions, reviewer decisions, and remediation history.
Safe remediation: Start with alerts and human approval before enabling automatic labeling, moving, masking, or deleting data.
If you use AWS heavily, also consider Amazon Macie for S3. It supports managed and custom data identifiers, scheduled discovery jobs, and findings that can feed automated workflows. Check supported formats and the distinction between sampled automated discovery and targeted discovery jobs. docs.aws.amazon.comdocs.aws.amazon.comdocs.aws.amazon.com See the Amazon Macie documentation.
4. A practical implementation plan
Define your classification taxonomy. Establish categories such as Public, Internal, Confidential, and Restricted, with specific subtypes for PII, PHI, payment data, credentials, and other regulated information.
Inventory your repositories. Identify data stores, owners, regions, access methods, and regulatory scope before choosing scan targets.
Pilot two or three tools. Test against a representative dataset with known sensitive records, including edge cases and non-sensitive lookalikes.
Measure detection quality. Track precision, recall, scan coverage, runtime, cost, and the number of records requiring manual review.
Automate the operational loop. Schedule scans, normalize findings into a central inventory, route high-risk issues to owners, and retain audit evidence.
Validate compliance separately. Map your inventory and controls to the applicable requirements. A discovery tool can provide evidence, but purchasing one does not itself establish regulatory compliance.
5. Let’s narrow this down to your environment
The most important selection factor is where your data actually lives.
Automating the discovery and classification of sensitive personal data (PII/EU/PHI) requires looking at modern Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) , specialized Privacy/Compliance Platforms , and traditional Data Governance/DLP engines.
1. Cloud-Native Data Security Posture Management (DSPM)
Best if your sensitive data lives heavily in multi-cloud data stores (S3, BigQuery, Snowflake, Azure) and you need automated, AI-driven discovery without heavy agent deployment.
Cyera: Highly rated for fast, AI-native classification across multi-cloud infrastructure . It maps data inventory, context, and exposure dynamically. Check out the to see how it handles cloud data stores.[](]()]()
If you need to automatically scan for personally identifiable information (PII), tag sensitive data, and demonstrate compliance across cloud, SaaS, databases, endpoints, and on-premises systems, look for data discovery and classification platforms. The strongest fit depends on whether you need continuous scanning, automated tagging, remediation, or regulatory reporting.
One important distinction: discovering and tagging PII helps meet regulatory requirements, but it does not by itself establish compliance with regulations such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, or HIPAA.
Tools worth evaluating
1. BigID
(Best starting point for hybrid environments)
Designed for broad discovery and classification of sensitive data across cloud, SaaS, on-premises systems, databases, file stores, and AI-connected data. Supports custom classification, OCR, and workflows that can drive labeling and remediation.
Best for: Enterprises with many data platforms and overlapping privacy, security, and governance requirements.
A strong choice for organizations invested in Microsoft 365, Azure, and Microsoft security tools. It identifies sensitive information using built-in and custom classifiers, supports sensitivity labels, and offers discovery and classification across supported Microsoft and integrated environments.
Best for: Microsoft-centric organizations seeking integrated labeling, data loss prevention (DLP), and governance.
Combines sensitive-data discovery with access and exposure analysis. It scans structured and unstructured data, including databases, file stores, cloud storage, SaaS, and email, and supports automated labeling and remediation workflows.
Best for: Teams that want to identify PII and also determine who can access it, where it is exposed, and what needs fixing.
Worth evaluating when data discovery needs to connect closely with privacy operations, data mapping, and regulatory workflows. Validate the specific connectors, scan depth, tagging destinations, and reporting features required in your environment before shortlisting.
Best for: Privacy and compliance teams that want to connect data inventory with broader privacy management.
These are a shortlist based on published capabilities, not a claim that one product has been independently verified as the best. Connector availability, licensing, and automatic tagging behavior vary by source and product edition.
Ask each vendor to demonstrate these capabilities against your actual environment:
Coverage: Can it scan AWS, Azure, GCP, SaaS applications, databases, endpoints, file shares, and on-premises systems you use?
Continuous scanning: Does it detect newly created or changed data, or only run scheduled full scans?
Automated tagging: Can it write labels or metadata back to each source, rather than just report findings in a dashboard?
Detection quality: Can it identify context-specific PII, such as customer identifiers, and let you tune false positives?
Compliance evidence: Can it produce exportable inventories, scan histories, policy results, and audit evidence for your applicable regulations?
Deployment and cost: What permissions, agents, network access, data transfers, scan limits, and licensing are required?
My initial recommendation is to evaluate BigID and Securiti for broad hybrid discovery, then compare Microsoft Purview if you are heavily invested in Microsoft and Varonis if access-risk remediation is equally important.
One question to narrow this down
What environments do you need to scan? For example, AWS/Azure/GCP, Microsoft 365, Salesforce, databases, endpoints, and on-premises file servers.
That will help identify which tools offer the most relevant coverage and which can actually apply automated tags across your specific systems.
Handling automated scanning, classification, and tagging of personally identifiable information (PII) across multi-cloud, on-premises, and SaaS environments requires enterprise Data Security Posture Management (DSPM) or comprehensive data intelligence platforms.[](https://www.decube.io/post/best-pii-detection-tools)
The leading tools capable of automated PII discovery, continuous monitoring, and dynamic tagging include:
BigID : Utilizes AI and machine learning for deep data discovery, classification, and cataloging. It excels at scanning structured and unstructured data across multi-cloud, on-premises, and SaaS repositories to automatically apply dynamic tags for PII and privacy regulations.
Securiti (DataControls Cloud) : An AI-powered platform designed to unify data privacy, security, and governance. It automates the discovery, classification, and tagging of PII data objects across major data warehouses, SaaS applications, and cloud infrastructures.
Microsoft Purview : A comprehensive data governance and risk management solution tailored heavily for hybrid and Microsoft-centric estates. It automatically classifies sensitive data, applies sensitivity labels, and integrates tightly with Azure and M365 environments.[]()
Yes. There are several AI-powered data discovery and classification tools that can scan databases, cloud storage, file shares, and other enterprise repositories to identify personally identifiable information (PII) and help classify it for GDPR compliance.
The category you're looking for is usually called automated data discovery and classification, often combined with DSPM (Data Security Posture Management) or Sensitive Data Discovery.
These tools can identify data such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, government identifiers, financial information, and—in some cases—special-category personal data under GDPR. They can apply classification labels, map where personal data is stored, and help you build an inventory of processing activities.
One important distinction: finding and tagging PII is not the same as achieving GDPR compliance. You'll still need to establish lawful purposes, retention rules, access controls, and appropriate handling of sensitive data.
Tools worth evaluating
Here are three strong starting points, depending on your existing infrastructure and how broadly you need to scan.
1. Microsoft Purview
(Best for Microsoft environments)
Particularly relevant if you use Microsoft 365, SharePoint, OneDrive, Azure, and SQL data sources. It offers sensitive-information classifiers, labeling capabilities, and scanning features for supported repositories. Coverage depends on the Purview component and source type.
Website:
2. BigID
(Best for heterogeneous data estates)
Worth evaluating if you need to discover and classify personal data across databases, data lakes, file shares, cloud storage, SaaS applications, and on-premises systems. It combines pattern matching, machine learning, NLP, and custom classifiers.
Website:
3. Securiti
Worth including in a shortlist if your goal extends beyond finding PII to privacy operations, data mapping, data-subject requests, and regulatory workflows. Confirm the precise connectors and classification actions in the proposed deployment.
Website:
These are candidates to evaluate, not a claim that any one tool will scan every repository in your environment without configuration.
What the scanning and tagging process looks like
1. Connect data sources
Databases, data warehouses, shared drives, document stores, cloud buckets, collaboration platforms, and backups where supported.
2. Discover and classify
Detect identifiers using predefined patterns, contextual rules, machine learning, and custom classifiers.
3. Apply labels and build an inventory
Record the source, data type, sensitivity category, confidence, and relevant owner. Depending on the connector, labels may be applied directly or recorded in a central catalog.
4. Review and enforce policy
Validate findings, correct false positives, identify high-risk locations, and connect classifications to access, retention, deletion, and privacy workflows.
What to check before choosing a tool
For GDPR classification, I would evaluate these five criteria in a proof of concept (PoC).
Requirement
What to verify
Coverage
Does it scan your actual databases, file shares, backups, SaaS apps, and cloud storage?
Classification accuracy
Can it detect contextual personal data, not just obvious ID patterns? Can you measure false positives and missed records?
Tagging
Can it apply labels to actual files, tables, and columns, or only produce a central inventory?
Security and privacy
Can it scan with read-only permissions, minimize data exposure, and meet your data residency requirements?
Operationalization
Can you schedule rescans, track changes, export evidence, and integrate findings into retention and access policies?
Be especially careful about scan depth. Some tools inspect only metadata or sample a subset of records, so a successful scan does not necessarily mean every record was examined. Microsoft documents source-specific sampling and scanning limitations.
For GDPR, also ensure the taxonomy distinguishes ordinary personal data from special-category data (such as health data), and captures the context needed to identify indirect identifiers. Don't rely on a generic “PII found” label alone.
My recommendation
If you're mainly using Microsoft 365 and Azure: start with Microsoft Purview.
If your data is spread across many vendors, databases, and file stores: put BigID on the shortlist.
If you want discovery tied closely to privacy operations: evaluate Securiti as well.
Before deploying any of them, run a PoC against representative datasets with known ground-truth PII, and measure detection accuracy, coverage, and whether the tags land where you need them.
Let me narrow this down for your environment
The best fit depends most on your infrastructure. Which systems do you need to scan?
1. What data sources do you have?
2. Where is the data hosted?
Mostly cloud
Mostly on-premises
Hybrid / mixed environment
3. What do you want the tool to do?
Find PII and create a central inventory
Automatically tag files, tables, and columns in place
These tools combine regular expressions (regex), pattern matching, and machine learning/Natural Language Processing (NLP) to understand context (e.g., distinguishing a random string of numbers from a real credit card number or national ID).[]()
