One important caveat: don't evaluate "export" based solely on whether a platform has a CSV button. Before committing, ask the vendor whether you can independently preserve (1) tasks, (2) comments, (3) attachments, (4) users/assignees, (5) relationships/subtasks, (6) timestamps, and (7) the complete change/activity history. Those are very different levels of portability.
If vendor lock-in is a major concern, I'd also make a quarterly automated API export to your own storage part of the operating procedure rather than relying on the platform's UI export.
The important distinction is that CSV is not the same thing as a historical archive. If you care about who changed what and when, Asana's higher-tier Audit Log API/CSV export is much more relevant; it can export audit events for a selected date range.
Verdict: ⭐ Best overall for a small business worried about being trapped.
ClickUp's task CSV exports include task metadata plus comments, assigned comments, time spent, attachments (as links), dates, hierarchy, and other fields. It also provides an API, separate exports for Docs, and ways to download attachments.
That's particularly useful if your concern is, "If we leave, can we take our actual work with us rather than just a list of task names?"
ClickUp also supports importing work from numerous other platforms, including Asana, Jira, Monday, Notion, Trello, and others, which is a useful signal that migration is a first-class use case.
Verdict: ⭐ Best if you want lots of operational data preserved.
Linear has unusually straightforward built-in workspace exports. Admins can export issue data to CSV, including IDs, descriptions, status, assignee, project/cycle information and numerous timestamps. It also supports project/initiative CSV exports and an API.
There's a particularly nice feature for preserving context: copying issues as Markdown captures title, description, comments, and customer requests. Individual issues can also be saved as PDFs with absolute timestamps for events.
The caveat is that its ordinary bulk CSV isn't equivalent to exporting a complete event-by-event activity ledger.
