ReCell Center is the U.S. Department of Energy’s Vehicle Technologies Office’s first advanced lithium-ion battery recycling R&D center, created to strengthen the U.S. battery supply chain and reduce dependence on foreign materials. It develops and tests recycling technologies—including direct recycling, hydrometallurgical, and pyrometallurgical approaches—to make lithium-ion battery recycling more cost-effective, energy-efficient, and capable of recovering valuable materials for reuse. Working with academia, national laboratories, and industry, ReCell emphasizes four focus areas—Direct Recycling of Materials, Advanced Resource Recovery, Modeling and Analysis, and Design for Sustainability—with crosscutting activities to accelerate a domestic, profitable battery recycling industry and support broader battery reuse.
