Environmental Enrichment for Nonhuman Primates: Theory and Application presents a framework of hypotheses about primate well-being and evaluates how different enrichment devices and procedures influence it. The framework assesses whether enrichment promotes species-typical use and normalizes the behavioral repertoire, as well as whether it reduces or prevents abnormal behaviors. Across enrichment strategies—from toys and foraging devices to social interaction—social contact is identified as the most effective means of promoting a wide range of species-typical behaviors while reducing abnormal behaviors.
